Wednesdays in Lent
TRAVERSE CITY — Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1050 Peninsula Dr., is hosting soup and dessert dinners on Wednesdays during Lent.
The next meal will be served at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 9. Children will meet from 6:45-7:30 p.m. to learn about Lent and complete a craft to take home, while the adults participate in a worship service.
TRAVERSE CITY — The goal of Diabetes Day on Wednesday, April 9, is to inform area residents about diabetes prevention and management.
The event will be held from 1-3 p.m. at Bayview Wesleyan Church, 720 Wayne St. Participants can meet with physicians, diabetes educators, representatives from medication and technology companies and other health care professionals. They also can have blood glucose meters checked for accuracy, sample healthy foods and take home recipes. There is no charge and the public is welcome.
Diabetes Day is sponsored by Munson Medical Center’s Diabetes Education and the Northern Michigan Diabetes Initiative. Call 935-8200 to learn more.
TRAVERSE CITY — The Lenten Luncheon series, sponsored by Church Women and Men United, concludes on Thursday, April 10.
The public is invited to a soup, sandwich and dessert meal at 11:30 a.m. at The Presbyterian Church, 701 Westminster. Music follows at noon and the Rev. Tom John of the Kewadin Indian Mission and Mary Collins of Northport will reflect on the theme “God’s Sacrificial Gift of Love” at 12:30 p.m. A $3 donation is suggested. Attendees also may bring signed Easter cards to go to local wounded veterans.
BENZONIA — The Benzie Area Women’s History Project will sponsor a presentation titled “Union Sisters/Closet Feminists” as part of the Benzonia Academy Lecture Series.
The program starts at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at Mills Community House, 891 U.S. 31. Guest speaker Michelle Kaminski, an associate professor at Michigan State University, will discuss both the overlap and tensions between the women’s movement and labor unions, highlighting the experiences of selected women labor leaders.
