— Christmas trees

CEDAR — The Cedar/Maple City Lions will be selling fresh-cut Christmas trees this holiday season.

Lions Club members will be available to help shoppers from noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, Nov. 30-Dec. 1, Dec. 7-8 and Dec. 14-15. The sale location is a half a mile east of the M-72 and County Road 669 junction, about 111/2 miles west of Tom’s West Bay. Shoppers also may cut their own any time and send a check to Cedar/Maple City Lions, P.O. Box 28, Maple City, MI 49664.

A donation of $10 for spruce trees and $25 for fir trees is suggested. Proceeds will help fund a local food basket program.

 

St. Andrew Society

TRAVERSE CITY — The St. Andrew Society will host a gathering Dec. 1 at Mt. Holiday.

A buffet dinner will be served at 6 p.m., followed by Highland dancers, haggis, bagpipes, a harpist and door prizes. The cost is $20 for adults. Reservations are required; call 947-3902.

 

‘Share and Learn’

BENZONIA — Grow Benzie will host a “Share and Learn” party for the start up of its Incubator Kitchen.

The party celebrates the growth of locally-made food products and businesses. It starts at 5 p.m. Dec. 2 at Grow Benzie, 5885 M-115, with music, followed at 5:30 p.m. with a potluck dinner and food samples. Presentations by emerging food entrepreneurs start at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited. Admission is free, however donations are welcome. Attendees are asked to bring a dish to pass and table service for the dinner.

 

Dine out, help BACN

BENZIE COUNTY — The community can enjoy dinner out and help Benzie Area Christian Neighbors on Dec. 3.

The Mayfair Tavern in Elberta and Thistle Pub at Crystal Mountain Resort in Thompsonville will donate a portion of each dinner receipt to BACN, the largest food and clothing pantry in Benzie County.

 

Bakers needed

SUTTONS BAY — The Suttons Bay Bingham Friendship Community Center is looking for cookie bakers to donate two to three batches of their favorite holiday cookies for the community center’s Cookie Extravaganza.

The cookie sale will be held from noon-3 p.m. Dec. 8. To add your name to the list of cookie bakers, call Mary Bush, 271-4404.

 

Holiday events

INTERLOCHEN — Interlochen Public Library, 9700 Riley Road, will sponsor its Holiday Mitten Tree from Monday, Dec. 2, through Friday, Dec. 20, and a holiday book sale from Dec. 2 through Dec. 31. For details, contact the library, 276-6767 or www.tadl.org/interlochen.

 

Jazzy Christmas

TRAVERSE CITY — The Trillium Singers, Sashay, and the Central Christmas Combo will present a program of holiday music on Dec. 1.

The “Jazzy Christmas” concert, featuring a cappella vocal and instrumental favorites, will start at 2 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church, 222 Cass St. A free-will offering will be taken to help support Central’s homeless outreach programs.

 



Historical Society

ELK RAPIDS — Amanda Holmes, executive director of the Fishtown Preservation Society, will be the guest speaker at the Thursday, Nov. 21, meeting of the Elk Rapids Historical Society.

The program starts at 7 p.m. at the museum, 301 Traverse St. Holmes will share her observations on some of the few remaining fishing operations on the Great Lakes and what they teach about the uniqueness of Fishtown. The public is invited. The suggested donation is $5 for adults and $2 for children. Proceeds benefit the historical society’s building preservation. Funk Arts Fest

TRAVERSE CITY — The community is invited to shop for holiday gifts at the Funk Arts Fest Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Grand Traverse Circuit, 225 W. 14th St.

The event will be held from 4-10 p.m. and features a variety of crafts and live music by Dede and the Dreamers, Miriam Pico, Deep Blue Water Samba, The Sick Notes, Jimmy Olsen and event host Fuki Papa. Admission is $5 and proceeds support the local arts and the Father Fred Foundation. Monetary and canned good donations also will be accepted for the Father Fred Foundation.

 

Relay for Life

TRAVERSE CITY — The Grand Traverse County Employees’ Relay for Life team will hold a silent auction fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 23.

Auction bidding will be open from 1-3 p.m. at the Arbors of Traverse Apartments Community Center, 2955 Leggett Drive. The public is welcome and admission is free. Successful bidders should pay by checks or cash only. For details, call 995-6113.

 

‘Little Mermaid’

TRAVERSE CITY — The Old Town Playhouse Young Company will present a stage production of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid Jr.”

The play is based on Disney’s 1989 animated film and the stage version opened on Broadway in 2008. The local production was directed and choreographed by Broadway dancer Minda Nyquist.

Performances are at 7 p.m. today and Friday, Nov. 21-22; at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23; and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, at the Old Town Playhouse, 148 E. Bake sale

TRAVERSE CITY — The Village at Bay Ridge will host a bake sale just in time for Thanksgiving.

Christmas in Nov.

TRAVERSE CITY — AC Paw will hold its “Christmas in November” craft show from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Grand Traverse County Civic Center. It will feature a wide range of craft items and more.

 

Toys for Tots

TRAVERSE CITY — Santa Claus will arrive by helicopter, weather permitting, to kick off the Toys for Tots Campaign on Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Great Wolf Lodge.

The event will be held from noon-2 p.m. and is free. Santa will be on hand to visit with children and there also will be helicopter tours, children’s activities, refreshments and music by the Traverse City Christian School choir. Visitors who bring a new, unwrapped toy donation also will be eligible to win door prizes.

Harvest Festival

CHARLEVOIX — The Barnard Harvest Festival will be hosted Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Barnard Grange Hall on Barnard Road at Klooster Road.

There will be music from 3-7 p.m. featuring Ernie Mindel & the Cedar Valley Band and a potluck at 4 p.m. Attendees should bring a dish to pass. Meat will be provided. For details, call 675-0004.

 

Recycling program

THOMPSONVILLE — Children are invited to learn about recycling and how worms are super heroes at the Betsie Valley District Library.

Magic show

TRAVERSE CITY — Ben Whiting will bring his original theatrical magic show to InsideOut Gallery, 229 Garland St., for one night only.
