---- — Workshop on falls

GAYLORD — The Ostego County Commission on Aging will offer a series of eight free classes for older adults concerned about falling.

“A Matter of Balance” is an award-winning program designed to manage falls and increase activity levels. It will be offered from 10 a.m.-noon Tuesdays, Jan. 7-Feb. 25, at the Gaylord Meal Site Lounge, 120 Grandview Blvd. Participants will learn to exercise to increase strength and balance, view falls as controllable, set goals for increasing activity and make changes to reduce fall risks at home. Contra dance

TRAVERSE CITY — Local band Swallowtail will provide music for the Saturday, Jan. 11, Bayside Travellers Dance Society contra dance.

The dance will be held at Twin Lakes Park, 6800 N. Long Lake Road, with a free dance lesson from 7-7:45 p.m. and dancing from 8-11 p.m. Pat Reeser-Hoekje will teach and call all dances. Admission is $8 for dance society members, $10 for non-members and $6 for students with ID.

ELK RAPIDS — Northern Michigan author Elizabeth Kane Buzzelli will talk about the Emily Kincaid mystery series and a new book she is working on Saturday, Jan. 11.

Buzzelli’s program starts at 3:30 p.m. at the Elk Rapids Historical Museum, 301 Traverse St. Her visit is sponsored by the Elk Rapids District Library. There is no charge and the public is welcome.
