Northern Notes: A Christmas Day thank-you

The sounds of multi-platinum recording artists Mannheim Steamroller will air on Christmas Day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on NewsTalk 580, WTCM-AM, as the Grand Traverse Pavilions’ gift to the community. This is the second year the Pavilions exclusively sponsored the music of Mannheim Steamroller throughout Christmas Day.

Hundreds of local youth groups, school children, church groups, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts volunteer countless hours during the holidays to sing to the residents and staff and share the music of the season. In addition to music, the volunteers also share holiday cards, sweet treats, one-on-one visits and a range of activities.

“(The broadcast) is a wonderful way to share the sounds of some of the world’s finest holiday musicians with residents and staff along with the individuals, families and businesses who support the Pavilions,” said Administrator and Chief Executive Officer Kory Hansen. “It’s a unique way to say thank you.”

Ann Bancroft’s mother, Betty, is a resident at Southridge Assisted Living in Traverse City. Ann wrote recently to acknowledge the staff for all the help and support they have given her and her mother over the years.

“For me, it is peace of mind not having to worry that my mother is treated with respect, consideration and care,” Ann wrote. “This is especially important as I live halfway across the country in Virginia and can only visit every couple of months.”

Ann went on to say that the staff has given her mother what she could not give her at home, socialization with many good friends, including the staff, with whom she is able to interact on a daily basis

“Even though she is no longer able to participate in all the wonderful activities they offer, there is still life all around her and I know she has always felt that Southridge really is her home,” Ann wrote. “Indeed, these people have been her family for the past six years. They have gone above and beyond what is required in their jobs and we would like to acknowledge them for being the great people they are and for the amazing job they do. You make an enormous difference in peoples’ lives, especially ours.”
