Quota taking proposals

TRAVERSE CITY — Quota International of Traverse City is taking proposals from nonprofit organizations that wish to receive funding from the 2014 Festival of Cakes event. The application deadline is Friday, Dec. 27.

The festival will take place in early November 2014 and funds would be available to the organization by Dec. 1. Organizations must be a 501(3)(c) and fall into Quota’s mission of helping and supporting the deaf, hard of hearing, speech impaired and disadvantaged women and children.

Submissions must be received by Friday, Dec. 27. Applicants will be notified of Quota’s decision by Jan. 10.



TRAVERSE CITY — The Mel Larimer Concert Series will present “Amahl and the Night Visitors” on Sunday, Dec. 22.

The Gian Carlo Menotti opera sung in English will be staged at 4 and 7 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 6105 Center Road. Soloists include Jeffrey Norris, Jon Oakley, Aaron Ingersoll, Ashley Larimer-Kelly, Eric Ranke and Jennifer Hogue as Amahl. Conductor Russ Larimer will lead a professional orchestra and additional singers from the church’s sanctuary choir and the community.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for senior citizens, $5 for children and $40 for families. They are available at or by calling the church, 941-8938.


‘Blue’ Christmas

BEULAH — St. Andrews Presbyterian Church will hold a special service for people experiencing loss of any kind including divorce, loss of a job, uncertainty, death and more.

The “ Blue Christmas Service” will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, at the church, 8190 Lincoln Road. It will include soft jazz, readings, quiet prayer and a candlelighting. For details, call 882-4241.

Duo performs

TRAVERSE CITY — The touring duo of Genna & Jesse will play several shows in the Grand Traverse area.

Performances will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 18-19, at Lake Street Cafe at Oryana Natural Foods Market; 7-9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20, at Right Brain Brewery; 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, at Northern Latitudes Distillery, Lake Leelanau; and at 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, at Brew.
