The American Lung Association in Michigan has received a Community Transformation Grant to partner with Northern Lakes Community Mental Health and other human service agency representatives from Crawford, Grand Traverse, Leelanau, Missaukee, Roscommon and Wexford counties to work on a 12-month project.

The project’s primary goals are to train local mental health professionals to better screen for tobacco use, to support and help individuals with mental illnesses to stop using tobacco, and to help Northern Lakes Community Mental Health accomplish its vision of becoming a tobacco-free culture.

As a way to involve the community in accomplishing the project’s goals, a Community Leadership Team has been formed with representatives from the following organizations: the American Lung Association, Disability Network of Northern Michigan, District Health Department 10, Freed Communications, Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan, Grand Traverse Community Collaborative, Grand Traverse County Health Department, Michigan Department of Community Health Tobacco Section, Michigan Association of Community Mental Health Boards, Northern Lakes Community Mental Health, Safe Harbor of Grand Traverse, and the Traverse Bay Area Tobacco Coalition.

CARF International has announced that North Country Community Mental Health has obtained accreditation for three years for several programs including Assertive Community Treatment, Case Management/Services Coordination (adults and children), Community Integration, Crisis Intervention (adults and children), Crisis Stabilization, and Outpatient Treatment (adults and children).

To achieve accreditation, North County Community Mental Health underwent a rigorous peer review process and demonstrated to a team of surveyors during an onsite visit that its programs and services are of the highest quality, measurable and accountable.

CARF, formerly known as the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, is an independent, nonprofit accrediting body whose mission is to promote the quality, value and optimal outcomes of services through a consultative accreditation process that centers on enhancing the lives of the persons served.
