Northern Notes: Good Samaritan goes the extra mile ... literally

In mid-January, Melissa Schrock’s nearly deaf Siberian husky, Hocus Pocus, got away from her near her Interlochen home.

“Huskies are known for running and run she did,” Melissa wrote. “My husband went out to search for her in the dark while the snow and wind were swirling around him. He caught sight of her heading for Long Lake Road in Interlochen. Amid the snow and wind he saw her in the headlights of the swerving cars (and) was wondering what he would tell our two small boys if she got hit.”

Car after car passed him as he tried to keep Hocus Pocus in his sights. Then, through the wind, he heard a voice yell “Is that your dog?” When Melissa’s husband answered yes, the kind stranger told him to hop in and he would help find her.

“They followed her jogging form for a bit until my husband could grab her. He fully intended to walk her back, but the driver insisted on delivering him safely home. We’d like to send a big thank-you to the man our little boys have nicknamed ‘the man in the Jeep who saved our dog.’ It’s nice to know that there are people out there who will go that extra mile (literally) to help others!”

Anne Walker of Traverse City was walking on the TART Trail near F & M Park when she unknowingly dropped her credit card and a card for a veterinary appointment.

Later she had calls on both her home phone and cell phone alerting her to the fact that she had lost her credit card. Brandy, her groomer at Doggy Stylez, called to say that her cards had been found. Dale Dent of Traverse City always walks on the TART Trail and found Anne’s cards in the snow. He used the appointment card to call Brandy and have her contact Anne. His fiance, Mary Jo, also called Anne.
