BENZONIA — Grow Benzie presents "Food Preservation without Refrigeration" on Tuesday, Nov. 13.
Craig Schaaf of The Golden Rule Farm in Kaleva will discuss alternative means of preserving food, including storing it in a root cellar, techniques for storing in the ground and using fermentation.
Class begins at 7 p.m., with a potluck beginning at 6. Those attending are asked to bring a dish to pass, drink and table service.

Petersburgh, N.Y. — Chef's Planet is launching a Messy Recipe contest to search for the gooiest, most flavorful, original recipes. Amateur and professional chefs and bakers are invited to submit favorite recipes that may leave the kitchen and oven a mess, but family and friends begging for more. Main dish, side dish, appetizer and dessert recipes can be submitted on the Chef's Planet Facebook page through Nov. 30.
Chef's Planet will select 10 finalists and 10 runner-ups to be featured in a special edition Chef's Planet 10th anniversary cookbook.

New camp cookbook
TRAVERSE CITY — Tim Murphy, former morning announcer at WKLT, has written "Flannel John's Hunting & Fishing Camp Cookbook."
The book offers more than 130 recipes, some with just two ingredients. Topics include breakfast, burgers, dinner, snacks, venison, desserts, breads, appetizers and beverages.
"With all the years I've done morning radio ... and all the hunting and fishing trips I've been on, I've collected a huge recipe library," Murphy said.
In fact, he plans to produce another book in May titled, "Flannel John's Critters, Fritters, Chili & Beer Cookbook."
