Nat. Register

PORT HURON — Five Michigan entities have been added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Bramble moored at Port Huron was selected and is significant because it's one of the first American vessels to successfully circumnavigate the North American continent through the Northwest Passage. It was decommissioned in 2003.

The other additions announced by the state include the J.J. Deal and Son Carriage Factory in Jonesville, the Hamtramck Stadium site that was a home for Negro Leagues baseball, the Eagle Harbor Coast Guard Station Boathouse in Keweenaw County and the Island City Historic District in Eaton Rapids.

Eight additional properties in Michigan were recently nominated to the National Register by the State Historic Preservation Review Board.

Cartoon exhibit

FLINT — The Flint Institute of Arts is the only scheduled U.S. stop for a collection of more than 100 cartoons by artists from 35 countries.

The exhibit is on loan from the Istanbul-based Aydin Dogan Foundation. The cartoons are culled from an annual international contest held by the Turkish organization.

The exhibit called "Drawing Together, International Cartoons" includes community outreach events on the role cartoons play in civil society. It runs through Dec. 30.

The cartoons come to Flint courtesy of a $108,950 grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.
