Kathy Prentice of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Grand Traverse is thrilled by the amount of money raised by the recent Bead for Life project. The sale of handmade beads and jewelry -- made by Ugandan women -- raised $5,300, Prentice said.
The proceeds will be used to support housing, job training, health care and education. The money raised in Traverse City can send three women to nursing school for three years or build two houses or cure nine children from Burkett's lymphoma, a cancer that grows on the face of children between the ages of 2 and 15, Prentice said.

Organizers of a recent drive to get holiday packages to troops are overwhelmed by the response.
Diane Mack said more than 20 boxes were shipped overseas earlier this month to troops in four different locations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Brent and Brad Nichols, both brokers at Remerica Real Estate, got the word out as well as provided the space for a collection point. All the businesses and individuals who contributed are "too numerous to list," Mack said, and donations for a second shipment are being accepted at Remerica's office, 831 Garfield Ave., or The Copy Shop at 8th and Woodmere through Dec. 2. The 19th annual Optimist Spare Time Bowlathon Bowl for Kids, held in October at Timber Lanes, raised $3,100.
All of the money stays in the Traverse City area and helps local kids, organizers said. Some of the projects the Optimist Club supports include the Boys & Girls Club, Child and Family Services, Friends of Mt. Holiday, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Northern Lights Figure Skating, TBAYS Youth Soccer, Youth Ballet, Traverse Area Community Sailing, the Salvation Army, Target Youth Christmas Shopping, baby pantries, Youth Environmental Education Cabin Property, Tri-Star Youth Soccer, YMCA, Lyle DeYoung Scholarship and the Great Lakes Children's Museum.
