Ronnie Alff, of Traverse City, says, "Almost 40 years ago I got this cookie recipe from the school secretary where I taught. She got it from her mother in San Antonio, Texas. It's my basic butter cookie for all occasions."
Butter Cookies
1 lb. butter or margarine
1 c. sugar
1/2 t. salt
1 egg
1 t. vanilla
4 c. flour
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Mix ingredients, in above order, in large bowl. Drop by full teaspoons on ungreased cookie sheets. Flatten with the bottom of a glass, dipped in flour, to about 1/4 inch. Bake for 10 minutes or until edges are slightly brown.
These are not very sweet cookies, Alff says. She likes to frost them with a frosting made of confectioners' sugar, a little soft butter, a few drops of milk and flavoring and whatever food coloring is appropriate to the season.
If you are packing gift baskets, Alff says, these cookies make good fillers.
