Part-time Omena farmer writes novel

TRAVERSE CITY -- Donald Lystra, a part-time Leelanau County resident, has published a novel, "Season of Water and Ice," set in Leelanau County in the 1950s.

The book follows Danny DeWitt, 14, who lives with his father in rural northern Michigan, and his friend Amber Dwyer, a pregnant teen rejected by her family. The outsiders form an unusual alliance that helps each other deal with their separate challenges.

Lystra lives on a farm just south of Omena, growing alfalfa and some grapes.
