Classes offered at Village at Bay Ridge

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Village at Bay Ridge will start a six-week seminar on grief recovery and support today and is taking reservations for a class on the benefits of laughter.

"Laughtersize" will be offered on Sunday, but reservations are due today. The class will meet at 1 p.m. in the East Private Dining Room and at 3 p.m. in the West Craft Room. The cost is $5 per person, or bring a friend and pay $2.50 each. For details or reservations, call 995-9385.

A Grief Recovery and Support course will start at 1 p.m. today in the West Private Dining Room. Meg Walton will lead a discussion on the book "Chicken Soup for the Grieving Soul." The class is free but the book is $15. For details or to reserve a space, call 932-9455.

Michael's Place seeks volunteers

TRAVERSE CITY -- Michael's Place, a healing center for grieving children, teens and families, is looking for volunteers in several areas of grief support.

Volunteers are needed for support group facilitation, programs at the new Family Support Center and other areas of support services. No experience is needed and training is provided.

Gluten-free group reschedules speaker

TRAVERSE CITY -- A program by Laura McCain, RD, the Traverse Area Gluten Free Support Group's dietary advisor, has been rescheduled for Monday.

McCain has taught gluten-free baking at Northwestern Michigan College and counsels newly diagnosed celiacs through Munson Medical Center. She will offer advice on preparing gluten-free meals and baked goods and suggest ways to make gluten-free items healthier.

The program will start at 7 p.m. at the group's new meeting site, Grace Episcopal Church, 341 Washington St. Attendees should use the back entrance and back parking lot. Anyone following a gluten-free diet or interested in learning more about the celiac condition is welcome. For details, call 943-9285 or 947-8324.

Ways to cope with grief at the holidays

TRAVERSE CITY -- Hospice of Michigan will sponsor an evening of sharing and reflection that will focus on coping with grief during the holiday season.

The program will begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the Hospice of Michigan office, 900 E. Front St. There is no charge and anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one is welcome. For details or to register, call 779-9570.

Suttons Bay School hosts benefit dinner

SUTTONS BAY -- Suttons Bay School will sponsor a fund-raising dinner for the mother of three Suttons Bay students.

Kristi McIntire has suffered liver damage as the result of atypical cirrhosis caused by a genetic disorder. She needs a liver transplant and is on the national organ transplant list. Her husband does not have medical insurance through his employment and although Kristi is on Medicaid, the family will have to pay about 20 percent of the costly medical expenses for the transplant and medication.

The dinner will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday in the cafeterias at Suttons Bay Elementary and Suttons Bay High School. The cost is $7 per person or $20 per family for the meal, which includes soup, salad, bread, a beverage and dessert.

Information meeting focus is adoption

TRAVERSE CITY -- Family Adoption Consultants will hold an information meeting on Wednesday.

A local adoption specialist, who also is an adoptive parent, will discuss options in domestic and international programs for single or two-parent families wishing to adopt a child. The meeting will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Traverse Area District Library, 610 Woodmere Ave.

Registered nurses' group will meet

TRAVERSE CITY -- A program on herbal remedies will highlight the Nov. 13 meeting of the Registered Nurses Association in Michigan (RN-AIM).

Nurse Practitioner Anne Hughes will be the guest speaker at the 6 to 8 p.m. dinner meeting at South City Limits Restaurant, U.S. 31 North. Dinner may be ordered from the menu and a certificate of attendance will be provided.

Food drive will benefit Goodwill Inn

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Goodwill Inn's annual food and essentials drive will take place at Brown Lumber.

Donations of non-perishable food items and essentials may be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 13 through 15, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 16. Meijer gift cards also will be accepted and will be matched by Meijer up to $1,000.

'Play Shop' designed to inspire women

LAKE LEELANAU -- Shann Vander Leek, founder of True Balance Life Coaching and yoga instructor, will lead a "Living Play Shop" designed to inspire women to clean out the cobwebs and overcome obstacles in their lives.

"Getting Your Groove Back" will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. on Nov. 15 at Union Yoga. The afternoon will be dedicated to relaxation and creative renewal through a combination of yoga, meditation and creative expression. The $67 cost includes creative materials and light refreshments.

Blood pressure and foot care clinic

Alden -- The Northwest Michigan Community Health Agency will offer a community blood pressure and foot care clinic on Nov. 18.

Dietitian available to counsel diabetics

Frankfort -- Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital is making it easier for patients diagnosed with pre-diabetes or diabetes to obtain needed diet counseling.

Paul Oliver's General Manager of Nutrition Lynette Maxey, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes education, will be available during Diabetes Month in November for evening and weekend appointments to meet individual diet counseling needs. A session includes information on diet, using a glucose meter, physical exercise and how to watch for complications of diabetes.
