Van Riper, an acquisition logistics technology director with 17 years of military service, is assigned to the 402nd Army Field Support Brigade at Joint Base Balad, Iraq. He is the son of Glenn and Elizabeth Van Riper, of Traverse City. The lieutenant colonel graduated in 1987 from Cypress Lake High School, Fort Myers, Fla., and received a bachelor's degree in 1991 from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach, Fla.
