Auditions to be held for civic orchestras

TRAVERSE CITY -- Auditions will be held on Tuesday for musicians interested in performing with the Civic Orchestra, the Civic Chamber Strings and the Civic Prelude Strings.

Formerly the Traverse Youth Orchestra, Bay Chamber Strings and the Prelude Chamber Strings, all three orchestras now are an educational program of the Traverse Symphony Orchestra. They offer student and adult musicians the chance to perform challenging orchestral repertoire under the guidance of professional musicians and educators.

Auditions will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church, 222 Cass St. Auditioners should prepare a scale and solo of their choice. To schedule an audition, call the TSO office at 947-7120 or e-mail zmoore@tso-online.org. Accommodations will be made for those unable to audition on Tuesday. Modest tuition fees apply and scholarships are available.

Artcenter will hold Open Critique Night

TRAVERSE CITY -- Artcenter Traverse City members are invited to submit up to two works of art for an Open Critique Night on Wednesday.

A guest facilitator will discuss members' artwork from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Artcenter, South Elmwood Avenue. Participants may choose between a general critique or a more in-depth dialogue with the facilitator.

Pico and Brown lead dance-off

TRAVERSE CITY -- Miriam Pico and Jody Brown hold a slight lead after the first Swing Shift and the Stars dance-off for charity held Friday, Aug. 30 at Leelanau Sands Casino Showroom.

The three judges' scores, out of a possible 30 points, were as follows: Miriam Pico and Jody Brown: 27; Marilyn Taylor and Philip Leete: 24; Mike Anton and Liz Reincke: 23; Brenda Biederman and Tom Morrell: 22; Kat Brown and Lou Grettenberger: 21; Bill Marsh and Jennifer Howard: 21. Audience votes will not be added until the Grand Finale on January 31.

The total raised for area charities after the first event was $5,020. Individual charity result were as follows: Bethany Christian Services: $572.67; Safe Harbor: $695.67; Women's Resource Center: $789.67; Traverse Health Clinic & Coalition: $1,293.66; American Cancer Society: $850.66; House of Hope: $817.67

The next Swing Shift and the Stars is scheduled for Oct. 3 at the City Opera House in Traverse City.

Ragtime musicians play at InsideOut

TRAVERSE CITY -- Luke Winslow-King will preview his upcoming album of original ragtime music, "Never Tired," on Sept. 12 at InsideOut Gallery.

Winslow-King will be joined by New Orleans musicians Jason "Jack" Jurzak of tuba and Richard Levinson on washboard for the 8 p.m. concert at the gallery, 229 Garland St. The doors open at 7 p.m.

Adult tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door. Student tickets are $10. Advance tickets are available at Borders Books, Oryana Natural Foods Market, Cuppa Joe, Patisserie Amie and InsideOut. For credit card orders or details, call 929-3254.

Entry delivery for art exhibition

TRAVERSE CITY -- Entries will be accepted Sept. 12 for the upcoming exhibit "Cross Currents: The Quilt's Influence on Contemporary Art."

Original art in all media that explores and interprets the influence of quilts and quilt motifs on contemporary art may be submitted from noon to 6 p.m. at The Art of Framing and Gallery, 430 W. 14th St. Jurying of the entries will take place on Sept. 13. The show will run from Sept. 19 through Dec. 29 at the gallery, with an artists' reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 20. Call 228-6042.

Fiddlers take the stage at jamboree

Honor -- The Original Michigan Fiddlers Association invites the public to a Fiddlers' Jamboree.

The event will open with a potluck, a jam session and dancing from 5 to 9 p.m. Sept. 12. It will continue Sept. 13 from 1 to 5 p.m. with dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. and square and round dancing from 7 to 10 p.m. Musicians are invited to bring fiddles or other acoustic instruments and callers are welcome.

All activities will be held at the Platte River Association Hall on U.S. 31. Donations are appreciated and the public is welcome. For details, call Howard or Mabel Foust, 325-3252.

Museum offers textile workshops

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Dennos Museum Center will offer four textile workshops with internationally recognized textile artists in conjunction with "12 Voices," an exhibit of art quilts on display at the museum.

Workshops include "Collage: Haiku as Inspiration" with Judith Content on Sept. 13; "Fabric Collage Angel" with Kathie Briggs on Sept. 27; "Silk Scarves" with Terry Tarnow on Oct. 4; and "Silk Fusion" with Desiree Vaughn on Nov. 15.
