Class on disease management
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Traverse City Senior Center, 801 E. Front St., will be the meeting site of a six-week chronic disease self-management program.
The "Partners on the PATH Workshop" is designed to give participants the skills and knowledge needed to better manage chronic disease through informal small group discussion and easy-to-understand materials. It is suited for both the newly diagnosed and anyone seeking more aggressive management for chronic diseases such as diabetes, arthritis, depression, COPD and others.
The program will meet from 3 to 5 p.m. six Tuesdays, beginning Sept. 23. A $1 per meeting donation will be accepted to cover the cost of refreshments. Yoga for heart and vascular health
TRAVERSE CITY -- Yoga for Health Education will offer a class designed around the work and best-selling book on reversing heart disease by Dr. Dean Ornish.
"Yoga for Heart & Vascular Health" will be offered from 5:30 to 7 p.m. 13 Mondays starting Monday, Sept. 8, at Yoga for Health Education, Building 50 at the Grand Traverse Commons.

Urgent Care is offering flu shots
TRAVERSE CITY -- Bayside Docs Urgent Care is offering flu shots.

Class combines martial arts, dance
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Health Education Institute, a partnership between Northwestern Michigan College and Munson Medical Center, will offer a fitness class that combines martial arts, dance and healing arts.
NIA (neuromuscular integrative action) was founded in San Francisco 20 years ago. Its movements are designed to promote healthy joints and balance and increase strength, flexibility and circulation.
Two 10-week classes will be offered in classroom D at Munson Community Health Center, 550 Munson Ave. Anna Wassa will lead a class that will start on Tuesday, while Sara Ebinger will lead a class that begins Sept. 11. Both classes meet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Knit a little, bowl a little at Nourish
TRAVERSE CITY -- Nourish will offer an hour of knitting and Wii bowling on Thursdays starting Sept. 11.
Participants are invited to work on their favorite knitting project between frames of Wii bowling starting at 10:30 a.m. The activity is free, but space is limited.

Local meeting of registered nurses
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Registered Nurses Association of Michigan (RN-AIM) will meet on Sept. 11 at South City Limits restaurant.
The meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. and includes a program titled "Election Updates: What RNs Need to Know" by Myrna Holland. Dinner may be ordered from the menu and a certificate of attendance will be provided.

Annual Walk to Remember planned
TRAVERSE CITY -- Families are invited to "Walk to Remember" their babies who have died through miscarriage, stillbirth or newborn death on Sept. 13.
The walk gives families a chance to remember and honor the memory of their child. It will start at 11 a.m. in the community room at the library, 610 Woodmere Ave. Participants then will move to the garden to hang ribbons on a tree in memory of the babies, followed by a walk along the Boardman Trail. A short program, music and refreshments also are planned.

Fitness class will stress Tai Chi
TRAVERSE CITY -- A fitness class offered by the Health Education Institute, a partnership between Northwestern Michigan College and Munson Medical Center will use Tai Chi for those suffering from arthritis, osteoporosis or back pain.
The class, based on sun-style Tai Chi, is suitable for any fitness level. It is designed to improve muscular strength, circulation, concentration, coordination and balance. Classes will meet from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesdays from Sept. 16 through Oct. 14 in classroom F at Munson Community Health Center, 550 Munson Ave.

Red Cross offers first aid, CPR, AED
ELK RAPIDS -- The American Red Cross of Northern Lower Michigan will offer a first aid, CPR and AED training class in Elk Rapids.
The class is the first of five first aid and CPR classes that will be offered by the Red Cross in Elk Rapids over the next year, thanks in part to a grant from the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation.
The class will meet at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 403 Traverse St. The CPR portion will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Sept. 16, with the first aid portion offered from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 18. Memory Walk hopes to end Alzheimer's
Traverse city -- Hundreds of northern Michigan residents are on the move to end Alzheimer's by participating in the Alzheimer's Association's signature event, Memory Walk, on Sept. 20.
This year marks the area's 19th annual walk. It will start at F & M Park, Railroad Avenue and State Street, with registration at 9:30 a.m. The opening ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by the walk.
