Open house at Montmorency Clinic

LEWISTON -- Otsego Memorial Hospital will hold an open house at its Montmorency Medical Clinic.

The open house will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday. It will celebrate the ownership and offerings of the clinic to Montmorency County. The clinic is located at 3040 Bourn St.

Free yoga and tai chi classes offered

TRAVERSE CITY -- Yoga for Health Education will offer free yoga and tai chi classes on Sept. 6 and 7.

The classes will meet from 9 to 10 a.m., 10:15 to 11:15 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. at Yoga for Health in the Village Center, 1200 W. 11th St., suite 106, at the Grand Traverse Commons. There also will be a "What Is Yoga" open session from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Benefit for breast cancer prevention

BELLAIRE -- The Antrim County High Tea for Breast Cancer Prevention will sponsor a 90-mile motorcycle ride through Antrim County.

The event will take place on Sept. 6. Registration will be from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at Ivan's at Schuss Village, Shanty Creek Resorts, with the ride starting at 11:30 a.m.

The cost is $60 per bike and $40 per rider. This includes coffee, rolls, a pin for each participant, and a sit-down dinner at Shanty Creek with dancing to music by The 45th Parallel. For registration details, call Coleen Rison, 533-8621, ext. 4298, or Dee Lynch, 377-7077.

Aging Commission program on balance

GAYLORD -- A program being offered by the Otsego County Commission on Aging will address concerns about falling that older adults often deal with.

"A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls" will meet from 10 a.m. to noon on eight Tuesdays from Sept. 9 through Oct. 28 at the OCCOA/Alten Zimmer Building, 120 Grandview Blvd. The program is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults and emphasizes practical strategies to manage falls. The program is free and a workbook will be provided.

Heartland Hospice offers grief support

KALKASKA -- Anyone facing the future after the loss of a loved one is invited to participate in a free grief support program.

"Exploring Grief" will meet from 2:30 to 4 p.m. seven Tuesdays from Sept. 9 through Oct. 21 at the Kalkaska County Annex Building, 890 Island Lake Road. It is sponsored by Heartland Hospice of Cadillac. For details, call 775-6840.

Red Cross blood supply critical

LANSING -- The American Red Cross is urging eligible donors to make or keep appointments to donate blood as blood supplies remain at critically low levels for the seventh straight week.

The Great Lakes Region provides blood products to patients in about 70 Michigan hospitals and has just over a one-day supply of all blood. A three-day supply is considered adequate.

Blood donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in good general health. Eligible donors are asked to call (800) GIVE-LIFE or visit www.redcrossmichigan.org to find a drive in their area.

Free help to quit using tobacco

LANSING -- The Michigan Tobacco Quitline is offering free nicotine replacement products for people who want to quit smoking or chewing tobacco.

The free program is available regardless of income or insurance status. It will provide up to an eight-week supply of nicotine patches, gum or lozenges for tobacco users who are 18 and older, meet basic health requirements and enroll in cessation services with the Tobacco Quitline. The free products will be available through Sept. 30 or while supplies last and are provided on a first come, first served basis.
