-- Jennifer Campbell, a student at Traverse City West Senior High School, was selected for membership by the National Society of High School Scholars. NSHSS recognizes students who have achieved academic excellence. She is the daughter of Christopher Campbell and Terri-Campbell-Smith, and the stepdaughter of Mark Smith.

-- West Shore Medical Center recently presented four area high school seniors with scholarships of $500: Joshua Briggs, an Onekama High School graduate, who will be attending Grand Valley State University to study pre-medicine; Julia Kedrowski, a Manistee High School graduate who is attending Grand Valley State University to study nursing and hopes to become a nurse practitioner; Allyson Owens, a Manistee High School graduate who is attending Grand Valley State University with plans to become a physician assistant; and Maria Solberg, a Manistee High School graduate, who is attending Hope College to study nursing.

-- Principal Mark Gaubatz, of St. Mary School, Lake Leelanau, has selected three students to receive the 2008 Principal's Awards: Ben Hughes, 2008 graduate and the son of Roger and Kathy Hughes of Cedar; Taylor Moore, 9th grade, the daughter of Corey and Nancy Moore of Traverse City; Hannah Weber, 6th grade, the daughter of Dan and Brenda Weber of Cedar.

-- Three Traverse City West Senior High School teachers were selected to participate in the annual reading and scoring of the College Board's AP Examinations. For AP European History: Kathryn Mead, history teacher; Stephanie Long, psychology teacher. For AP United States Government and Politics:Tak Ready, U.S. Government teacher.

-- The Northwestern Michigan College Board of Trustees has conferred the college's highest honor, "NMC Fellow," to Barbara and Chuck Benson, Louise Hagerty, and Terry and Wayne Lobdell.

-- Kohl's Kids Who Care Scholarship Program honored the following local students with $50 gift cards and recognition certificates from Kohl's for their community volunteerism: Haley Mcvannel of Johannesburg; Abby Miller of Traverse City; and Heather Goudey of Traverse City.

-- Kasandra Wildfong, Mancelona kindergartner, was a first place winner in Reading Rainbow's 14th Annual "Young Writers and Illustrators" contest at WCMU. Wildfong's book is titled "An Octopus, George Washington and Blue Ice Cream." Timothy Bott, Buckley third grader, was also a first place winner. Bott's book is entitled "Hamster Escape."

-- The first class of associate degree nursing students has graduated from Baker College of Cadillac. Local graduates include: Lisa Compton of McBain, Courtnee Desmond of Cadillac, Angela Ingraham of Cadillac, Jamie Mathewson of Cadillac, Lisa Neumann of Traverse City, April Sibinovski of McBain, Kristy Slick of Williamsburg, Nicole Traxler of Manton, Tammy Dean of Traverse City and Kristie Richmond of Mesick.

-- Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs recognized the following Interlochen Academy of the Arts students for the 2008 youngARTS program: Kyle Mack Coolidge, Honorable Mention Award ($250), Classical Piano; Alice Elizabeth Hefferlin Thomsen, Honorable Mention Award ($250), Short Story; Samuel Wilson Hinkle, Silver Award ($5,000), Classical Baritone; Irene Paige Hofstetter, Merit Award ($100), Poetry; Aaron Richard Jaffe, Merit Award ($100), Cinematic Arts; Andrew Michael Marquardt, Merit Award ($100), Spoken Only; Ines Pujos, Merit Award ($100), Poetry; Shawn Carl Smith, Merit Award ($100), Photography Digital.

-- Traverse City Central High School student Megan Gill of Traverse City participated in Operation Bentley on the campus of Albion College, learning about government operations, writing and seeking support for legislation students developed, and engaging in local and state government simulations.

-- Three local students graduated recently from Valparaiso University (Indiana): Breton Jaskiw of Manistee, Joseph Lazar of Traverse City and Erica Gulliksen of Levering

-- Caitlin P. Watkins, daughter of John and Shelley Watkins of Leland, was awarded the Joanne Woodward Trophy from Kenyon College. Watkins earned the award for her performances as Nan and Lina in Richard Greenberg's "Three Days of Rain." A graduate of Leland Public School, Watkins graduated from Kenyon with a bachelor's of arts degree.

-- Rebecah Baker, a 2004 graduate of Traverse City St. Francis High School, graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor's degree in Education. She is the daughter of James and Carla Baker of Interlochen.

-- Spring Arbor University graduated Scott David of Traverse City in February 2008 with a master's degree in Organizational Management.

-- Brian Hanson of Traverse City received SIAM Journal Membership from Miami University's (Ohio) math and statistics department.

-- Christine Olson, a student of Traverse City West Senior High School and daughter of James and Myonssoon Olson of Traverse City, was invited to participate in the Michigan Youth Arts Festival's Honors Orchestra.

-- Kayla Peabody, daughter of Bruce and Karen Peabody of Thompsonville, earned a Congressional Award Bronze Medal. U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Holland) presented Kayla with the honor during the Benzie County Lincoln Day Dinner. She is a student at Western Michigan University.

-- Alison Seidleman, 2005 graduate of Kingsley High School, received the Irene H. and Dr. Lloyd M. Williams Endowed Scholarship from Michigan State University's College of Education. She is the daughter of Mike and Sandy Seidleman.

-- The following students from the area graduated from Alma College: Emily Wieland of Petoskey; Jordan Voice of Boyne City; Taylor Fischer of Charlevoix; Shannah Ford of Elk Rapids; Elijah Woolcott of Elk Rapids; John Chelis of Ellsworth; Kaitlin Logan of Harbor Springs; Amanda Abramczyk of Johannesburg; Ashley Korson of Lake Leelanau; Benjamin Smith of Traverse City; Adam Valentino of Traverse City; Amy Wegener of Traverse City.

-- Lauren Heimburger of Traverse City, a graduate of St. Francis High School, was awarded the Reformed Church Honors Scholarship at Hope College in Holland.

-- Kelly Shugart, a Hope College freshman from Traverse City, received the Physics Book Award.

-- Martha E. Precup of Boyne City, Amanda L. Boss of Charlevoix and Marlie A. Johnson of Petoskey received the Sigma Xi Award from Hope College at graduation.

-- Jacob Spencer, son of Dan and Jeanne Spencer of Traverse City, has been accepted to the University of Northwestern Ohio (Lima), where he will major in Automotive Technology.

-- The National Society of High School Scholars selected St. Francis High School student Julie Doherty and Traverse City West Senior High student Luke Hessler for membership.

-- Spencer Engler of Traverse City Central High School, Elise M. Carolon of Traverse City West Senior High School and Molly Margaret Poel of Bellaire High School were honored as recipients of scholarships awarded by the Grand Traverse Area Michigan Education Association Retired.

-- Robert P. Paschall, a senior at Northwood University and son of Dan and Sheri Paschall of Kalkaska and Jack and Lori Smith of Mesick, received the four-year Aftermarket Management Award. Garret M. Boursaw, a sophomore and son of Terance and Jane Boursaw of Traverse City, received the Donald D. Buchard Journalism Award (Yearbook).

-- Glen Lake School scholarship winners for 2008 were all from Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City. The $1,500 scholarship winners were: Gina Gauthier, Benjamin Pina, Aaron King, Rachelle Brzezinski, Matthew Keim, Joseph Galla, Jessica Syrocki, and Andrew Wichtoski. The $2,000 Jeanine Wessinger Dean Award went to Ian Vertel.

-- Lindsay Demoore Millard of Petoskey and Jacob Ira Dunham of Lake Ann recently graduated from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.

-- Traverse City Central High School graduates Brian Wibby and his wife, Beth (Mikovitz) Wibby graduated from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. They also won Dean's Awards for Outstanding Student Achievement. Brian's parents are Jim and Sandy Wibby of Petoskey, formerly of Traverse City. Beth's parents are Tim and Kit Mikovitz of Traverse City.

-- Alanna Lahey of Traverse City recently graduated from Tulane University in New Orleans.

-- Hannah Rodgers of Traverse City, Marcelo Nazario Betti of Traverse City, Traci D. Joseph of Elk Rapids, Jana Lanning of Mancelona and Kara McKinnon of Traverse City were named to the National Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi at Grand Valley State University.

-- Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine announced that Jonathan Dargo, son of James and Janet Dargo of Traverse City, will complete a medical residency in Psychiatry at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. He is a graduate of Traverse City Central High School.

-- Kaitlyn Borden Bedick, daughter of John and Nanette Bedick of Traverse City, earned a bachelor of science in biology from Saint Michael's College in Burlington, Vt.

-- Audra McClure of Lansing earned a certificate of Merit in Scholarly Writing from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing. She is a graduate of Central Michigan University and Mesick High School.

-- The Manton Rotary Club awarded a $500 grant to the Manton Elementary School for improvement of the school's playground.

-- The Recreational Boating Industries Educational Foundation awarded scholarships to 12 Michigan students for the 2008-09 school year, including Elizabeth Carney of Traverse City.

-- Allison J. Mauk, daughter of Daniel and Jean Mauk of Traverse City, received a bachelor of arts degree from Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.

-- Jenny Bowser, daughter of Jim and Joan Bowser of Traverse City, graduated with degrees in economics and Spanish from Hillsdale College.

-- Chelsea Guzzo of Traverse City graduated from Marquette University in Milwaukee with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree.

-- Kathi and Craig Mulder and family of Traverse City are welcoming Hellen Fiona Julia Roos, a Youth for Understanding USA student from Germany. Hellen will be attending Traverse City West Senior High School in the fall.

-- Kirstin Robinson of Traverse City was awarded a scholarship under the Hershey Company Scholars Program. A graduate of Traverse City West Senior High School, Kirstin plans to attend Hope College in Holland. She is the daughter of Darrel and Ronda Robinson.
