A device that combines the best qualities of nuclear and CT scanning now is available for patients at Munson Medical Center.

The SPECT/CT includes a gamma camera, CT scanner, moveable patient table and computer to convert data into functional SPECT images and anatomic CT images, which then can be displayed as separate or overlapping images on the monitor. Munson is the only hospital in northern Michigan where SPECT/CT imaging is available.

Primary applications include tumor detection in various parts of the body, diagnosis of hyperfunctioning of the parathyroid glands and detecting hidden gastrointestinal bleeding sites. It also will enhance lymph node detection in patients with diseases such as breast cancer or malignant melanoma.
