Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital President Jim Austin has been recertified as a fellow by the American College of Healthcare Executives. Fellow status is the highest level of achievement in the organization.

Austin has been president at Paul Oliver for 13 years and administrator at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center for 19 years. He has served on the board of directors for the Michigan Health and Hospital Association, Health Care Association of Michigan, Traverse City Chamber of Commerce, the Grand Traverse Medical Control Authority and the Michigan Senior Power Day.

Munson Medical Center Family Nurse Practitioner Michelle Witkop, FNP-BC, recently received the Professional Excellence in Nursing Award from the Michigan Bleeding Disorder Community at its annual conference in Frankenmuth.

The award recognizes Witkop's "outstanding service and dedication to the hemophilia community in 2007-08. In addition to serving patients in northern Michigan with bleeding disorders, Witkop has been involved in a national research study examining how hemophilia patients deal with pain. Munson's Hemophilia Clinic is one of nine treatment centers in Michigan.

Jeanne Strathman, owner of Advanced Hearing Center in Traverse City and Benzonia was among only five business leaders from Michigan selected to participate in a Thought Leadership Event sponsored by the Siemens Corp. of Chicago.

Strathman has been helping the hard of hearing since 1980, has been a director of the board for the Michigan Hearing Society, and was recently recognized as an expert by the state of Michigan and helps to develop state licensing tests for hearing aid dealers.

Pete Edwards, owner/founder of the American Nordic Walking System and www.skiwalking.com Nordic Walking Poles, has received Elite Nordic Walking Instructor certification.

Edwards' company is based in Glen Arbor and distributes Nordic Walking Poles worldwide.

Great Lakes Plastic Surgery Center recently completed a successful Spring Fling Seminar.

More than 150 guests were treated to champagne, appetizers, desserts and a chocolate fountain along with demonstrations by representatives from Botox, Jane Iredale Mineral Cosmetics, Mentor and other companies. Attendees also made donations to the new Smith Family Breast Health Center that totaled more than $500, which was matched by the surgery center.
