June 20, 2008 12:00 am Pig Roast Festival promises fun for all ELLSWORTH -- "When Pine Was King" is the theme for the Ellsworth Pig Roast, a family festival to be held Friday through Sunday. The festivities start early on Friday with a 6 a.m. fishing contest at Chain-O-Lakes Sporting. Banks Township Hall is the place to be in the evening for an ice cream social from 6 to 8 p.m., and a "Purdiest Pig Contest," followed by a screening of the family film "Babe" at 7 p.m. Ice cream with all the toppings is $2.50. Kids can enter the contest by picking up a "snout" at Charlevoix State Bank Ellsworth Branch and arriving at the social in costume. Free popcorn will be served during the movie. Saturday's schedule includes a fun run, a pancake breakfast at Banks Township Hall, historical trolley tours, a Grand Parade, free kids' games, two performances by Great Lakes Timber lumberjack show, a roast pork dinner with music by a Bit of Brass, and a horse pull and Three-Point Shoot Out. The festival will close with a community hymn sing and worship service at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday in the elementary school gym. The price for the pork dinner is $7 for adults and $6 for children and senior citizens. Admission for Great Lakes Timber is $5 per person or $12 for a family of four. Vintage cars and boats at Bay Harbor Bay Harbor -- The Bay Harbor Vintage Car & Boat Festival, formerly known as the Concours Festival, will be held today and Saturday. The event is a fundraiser for the Bay Harbor Foundation, a charitable, nonprofit organization that distributes grants in northern lower Michigan to provide programs in the arts, education, the environment and health and human services. The festival will roll into the Village at Bay Harbor with the third annual Bay Harbor Northern Michigan Dream Cruise from 5 to 10 p.m. today. Anyone can bring their hot rod or muscle car and cruise the streets of Bay Harbor. There also will be entertainment by Lake Street Ramblers, Epsilon Jazz Band and the Jelly Roll Blues Band and a variety of children's activities. The 100th anniversary of the Thomas Flyer, a vehicle designed to complete the "Around the World Auto Race" in 1908, will be celebrated with a police-escorted Thomas Flyer Race from Bay Harbor to Petoskey starting at 6 p.m. and there will be a boat parade at 7 p.m. The festival continues on Saturday with the Vintage Car & Boat Parade at 10 a.m. Awards will be announced at 2 p.m. and the show will close at 3 p.m. For details, call 439-2700 or e-mail info@bayharborfoundation.org. Public invited to 'Taste of Charlevoix' Charlevoix -- Area restaurants and food and beverage vendors will showcase their specialties at the fifth annual "Taste of Charlevoix." The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in downtown Charlevoix. Restaurant and food vendors will serve one or two of their specialties in portions that range in price from $1 to $5. Beer and wine will be served in commemorative "Taste of Charlevoix" glasses. The Charlevoix Chamber of Commerce will sell tickets for $1 each to redeem at vendor stations or to purchase soft drinks or commemorative glasses for beer and wine. Beer cups are $1 and wine glasses are $4. Admission to the children's area is $2, which gives children unlimited access to a jump house and an inflatable slide, face painting and four cookies to decorate. Musical entertainment will be provided throughout the event. The Charlevoix City Band will play from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the North Country Strings Band will perform from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Celebrate the Summer Solstice Traverse City -- An open house at the Village at Grand Traverse Commons will celebrate the longest day of the year. The Summer Solstice Open House will be held from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday with music, prizes and activities for adults and children at many of the businesses located at the Commons. To cap the day's activities, there will be a Panache and the Pooch fashion show at 6 p.m. The Grand Traverse Commons is located on 11th Street off Division. French reprises local history talk Traverse City -- Dorothy "Dotty" Wilhelm French will repeat her Living History Series program titled "Tales From Yesterday: A Look Back At Traverse City in the '30s and '40s." French's grandfather was one of Traverse City's pioneers and she is a lifelong local resident who currently lives just one block from the home in which she was born.
