Church holds auction event today

SUTTONS BAY -- Suttons Bay Congregational Church will present the Time, Talent, Treasure and Auction Extravaganza from 5 to 8 p.m. today. The event will take place in an aircraft hangar on Tool Shed Lane, one mile north of Cedar on County Road 651.

The event, with appetizers, beverages, entertainment and live and silent auctions, is a benefit for Leelanau Christian Neighbors. Tickets are $1 at the door.

Singles group offers dinner, movie night

Petoskey-- Singles for Christ of Zion Lutheran Church, a group for singles ages 40 and over, will meet for dinner at 7 p.m. today at Giuseppe's Italian Grille, 757 Petoskey St., in Charlevoix.

After dinner the group will attend a showing of C.S. Lewis' "Prince Caspian" at Cinema III in Charlevoix.

Baccalaureate for Brethren grads

BRETHREN -- Local pastors will conduct a special joint baccalaureate service for Brethren High School Class of 2008 graduates and their families at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Epworth United Methodist Church in Brethren.

The baccalaureate service is a joint effort of the pastors of several area churches and their congregations, asking for God's blessing on the graduating class and their families. Each graduate will receive a special Bible inscribed with his or her name.

The Epworth United Methodist Church is located at 3939 N. High Bridge Road, south of Brethren High School.

36th annual bike blessing on Sunday

BALDWIN-- The 36th annual Blessing of the Bikes will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Baldwin Airport. Gates open at 9 a.m. rain or shine. The blessing will be performed by the Rev. Ed Boucher from St. Ann's Catholic Church. Cost is $5 per motorcycle. For details, call June Sanborn, 854-4545.

Choral group at Onekama Brethren

ONEKAMA -- Manchester College's A Cappella Choir and Chamber Singers will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. May 20 at the Onekama Church of the Brethren, 8266 Mill St.

The 48-member choir from North Manchester, Ind., is in Michigan on its 2008 spring tour.

The choir has traveled widely, with performances last spring in Carnegie Hall, in famed cathedrals of Italy in 2004, and earlier this spring in the Washington, D.C., area.

Their program offers songs in English, German, Latin and Slovak, mixing new music with old favorites. An offering will be taken. Call 889-4311.

Supper benefit for Chinese orphanage

TRAVERSE CITY -- The First Congregational Church will sponsor a spaghetti dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. May 22 at the church, 6105 Center Road, to benefit the Beijing Children's Orphanage.

Proceeds will be sent to the orphanage for playground equipment, school supplies and hospital costs. Cost is $10 for adults; $5 for children or $25 for families.

The church is seeking volunteers and donations. Tax-deductible checks can be made out to First Congregational Church with Orphanage Fund on the memo line. Call Dianne Walker, 941-8076.

Stem cell expert offers presentation

Traverse City -- Dr. Daniel Pepin will be the keynote speaker at the upcoming Northern Michigan Ave Maria Founders Club event, scheduled for May 21 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 720 Second St. Registration will begin at 5:30.m., followed by Mass at 6 p.m. The dinner and the presentation will immediately follow the Mass in the Fellowship Hall.

Pepin is a professor of human biology and anatomy and physiology. He's also the consultant on bioethics for the Diocese of Venice, Fla., and the Diocese of Gaylord. His program, "Stem Cell Research: Fact or Fiction?" addresses the seemingly complicated and often confusing issues surrounding stem cell research and human cloning from a scientific, ethical and understandable approach.

The program is open to the public. Cost for the dinner is $10. For details, call 935-1874.

GTACS seeks Hall of Fame nominees

TRAVERSE CITY-- The Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools district are accepting nominations for a Hall of Fame through July 15.

An induction ceremony is planned for Sept. 27 prior to the St. Francis High School homecoming football game.

Candidates will be considered for their service as outstanding role models for students, parents, faculty and all members of the school community. Nomination forms can be obtained from www.gtacs.org. For details, call Cindy Weber, 995-8425.

Revival Center holds holiday yard sale

CADILLAC -- The Revival Center of Cadillac is sponsoring a Memorial Day yard sale from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 23 and 24 at the church, 984 Plett Road.

The sale will include clothes, household items, furniture, office chairs, book, tools and miscellaneous items. Proceeds will help fund a new church sign and paving project.

Traverse Bay UM yard, bake sale

TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse Bay United Methodist Church will sponsor a yard and bake sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 24 at the church, 1200 Ramsdell Road.

The event will offer a large selection of miscellaneous items with proceeds to benefit a June mission trip to Kentucky. For details, call 946-4930.

American Indian history discussion

TRAVERSE CITY -- Helen Tanner, senior research fellow at Chicago's Newberry Library, will speak on the topic "The Blessings of Balance: An Indian Viewpoint" during the 10 a.m. service on June 1 at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 6726 Center Road.

Tanner's book, "Atlas of Great Lakes Indian History," is considered instrumental in the study and understanding of American Indian history.

Lois Beadsley, American Indian author and artist, will read several of her original poems and share Ojibwa art forms. Following the service there will be an informal discussion on the topic.

Summer schedule at Calvary Lutheran

ELK RAPIDS -- Calvary Lutheran Church ELCA, 10180 Elk Lake Road, will begin its summer schedule on June 1. The 9:30 a.m. service encourages casual dress and a coffee hour follows the services. For details, call 264-8841.
