Goodwill Week activities planned

TRAVERSE CITY -- Goodwill will host open houses and programs today in observance of Goodwill Week.

Open houses will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Goodwill Industries, 2279 S. Airport Road, and at Paperworks Studio, 2889 Aero Park Drive. Programs on homelessness will be held from 4 to 5 and 6 to 7 p.m. at the Traverse Area District Library, 610 Woodmere Ave.

Gluten-Free group hosts tea cupping

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Traverse Area Gluten Free Support Group will host a Gluten-Free Mother's Day Tea Cupping and will have a guest speaker at its regular meeting.

The tea-cupping program and gluten-free tasting will begin at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Dennos Museum, 1701 E. Front St. It will be led by Angela Macke, of Light of Day Organics. The $20 cost includes tea education, cupping, gluten-free refreshments and shopping. Pre-payment is required. For reservations, call Light of Day Organics, 228-7234.

The support group will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday in the Grand Traverse Mall community room, South Airport Road. Michelle Fuller from Celiac Specialties, Michigan's largest dedicated gluten-free bakery, will discuss the business, how Expandex is revolutionizing gluten-free baking, and new product development. She also will have gluten-free bakery items to sample and purchase.

Speaker will discuss anger and grief

TRAVERSE CITY -- Lois Saltsman will be the guest speaker at Monday's meeting of the Grand Traverse Area Chapter of the Compassionate Friends, a self-help organization for families who have experienced the death of a child from any cause and at any age.

Saltsman will discuss "Anger and Grief" at 7 p.m. in Conference Room E at Munson Community Health Center, 550 Munson Ave. Newcomers are welcome. She is a therapist at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services, a part-time chaplain at Munson Medical Center and also is a bereaved parent.

Early childhood educator shares tips

TRAVERSE CITY -- Early childhood educator Cheryl Bloomquist will explore essential parenting issues for the first and second year in two sessions.

Bloomquist has worked in early childhood development for 28 years and taught parenting and childbirth classes for 20 years. She teaches child development classes at Northwestern Michigan College.

The first session will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Participants will learn ways to be intentional in parenting by building on intuition and the child's individuality.

The second session will be held 6 to 8 p.m. May 20. It will examine the importance of valuing each stage of a child's development. Participants will explore new ways to view toddlerhood and build on the child's experiences.

Both sessions will meet in room 104 in NMC's Scholars Hall. The cost is $25 for a single session or $45 for both. Advance registration is required. For details or to register, call 995-1700.

Glen Eagle Wellness Expo rescheduled

TRAVERSE CITY -- Glen Eagle Retirement Community has rescheduled its Senior Wellness Expo for Wednesday.

More than 20 local businesses and organizations specializing in senior interests and well-being will be represented at the expo, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Glen Eagle, 3950 Sumac Drive. There will be giveaways, door prizes and refreshments.

Barbecue delivery reservations due

TRAVERSE CITY -- Senior citizens who are homebound have until 5 p.m. Wednesday to purchase tickets to have a picnic meal delivered from Northwestern Michigan College's Barbecue.

The event will be held May 17 on NMC's main campus. Meals will be delivered between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Any homebound senior citizen living within five miles of the Traverse City city limits may have a meal delivered through the efforts of the Commission on Aging, Traverse City Police Department and community volunteers.

Barbecue tickets are $5. Paid reservations may be made by calling the Grand Traverse Commission on Aging, 922-4688.

MS support group plans meeting

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Multiple Sclerosis Support Group will meet Wednesday.

The meeting will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in rooms A and B at Munson Community Health Center, 550 Munson Ave. There will be updates on recent studies and teleconferences. For details, call 947-0244.

Advice on reducing heart attack risks

TRAVERSE CITY -- Cardiologist Dino Recchia will give a presentation on understanding and modifying the risk factors for heart disease.

The program will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. May 14 at Munson Medical Centers' Conference Room 1. Recchia will discuss how coronary artery blockages develop and modern-day treatment strategies. A question-and-answer session will follow.

Town Hall meeting on health care

MANISTEE -- The League of Women Voters Manistee County will host a town hall meeting on health care issues.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. May 14 at West Shore Medical Center, 1465 E. Parkdale Ave. It is an opportunity for individuals, health care providers and government to share ideas on the cost of health care in the United States.

Speaker will address registered nurses

TRAVERSE CITY -- Val Harpel will discuss anxiety and depression at the next meeting of the Registered Nurses Association in Michigan.

Preview features surgical robot

ACME -- The newest in surgical technology for women facing hysterectomy or pelvic organ prolapse repair will be previewed at two events.

The da Vinci surgical "robot" is controlled by the operating surgeon. It allows tiny incisions to be used for surgeries such as hysterectomies, allowing women to return to normal activities much more quickly.

The robot also will be available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 21 during the Women's Expo at the Grand Traverse Mall, South Airport Road. Free skin cancer screenings offered

TRAVERSE CITY -- The American Cancer Society and the Michigan Dermatological Society will conduct free skin cancer screenings May 21.

No appointment is necessary for the screenings, which will be offered from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in classroom 11-12 in the basement at Munson Medical Center, 1105 Sixth St. Call the American Cancer Society, (800) 227-2345, to learn more.

Senior Center offers exercise choices

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Traverse City Senior Center offers a variety of exercise options on a daily basis for adults 50 and older. Individuals need not be Senior Center members to participate.

Classes include Ageless Exercise 9:30 a.m. Mondays, featuring movement to music using hand weights as desired, free; an exercise class that includes free weights and therapeutic bands led by Karen Belanger, of Premier Fitness, 9 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday, $2 for members, $3 for non-members; and a class focusing on balance and coordination with physical therapist Michelle Hollis, of Great Lakes Therapy House Calls, 2:15 p.m. Wednesday and Friday, $1 for members, $2 for non-members.

Natural health expo is Saturday

TRAVERSE CITY -- The third annual Natural Health and Wellness Expo is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Grand Traverse County Civic Center.

There will be information on supplements, organic food, green technology and cleaning products, as well as other things that contribute to the health and well-being of humans, animals and the Earth.
