Students serenade moms at concert TRAVERSE CITY -- Interlochen Arts Academy student musicians and vocalists will present a free Mother's Day concert May 11. The concert, part of the "Live! Music @ the Library" series, will begin at 3 p.m. at the Traverse Area District Library, 610 Woodmere Ave. Performers include vocalist Rachel Borovik, pianist Gil Chapman, guitarist Peter Wagner, bassist Max Beckman and percussionist Gabe Smith. Anime Convention is a first here TRAVERSE CITY -- A first-ever Northern Michigan Anime Convention will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. at Northwestern Michigan College. Guest speaker Tiffany Grant of "Neon Genesis Evangelion" fame will speak on panels and sign autographs. Also participating will be Baka Savant. The $15 cost to attend includes live role-play events. Noel Coward farce at Crooked Tree PETOSKEY -- Little Traverse Civic Theatre will present the Noel Coward farce, "Blithe Spirit," opening May 8. Writer coming to Opera House TRAVERSE CITY -- Poet and musician Derrick Brown will perform May 16 at the City Opera House. A former paratrooper for the 82nd Airborne, gondolier, magician and fired weatherman, Brown now travels the world performing his poetry. Brown has won several awards, including the California's Independent Book Critic's Award in 2004, and six first-place finishes in Venice Beach, England and Germany. He has published several books, including "Born in the Year of the Butterfly Knife," and most recently, "I Love You Is Back." Local musician Mike Moran will open for Brown at 7:30 p.m. After Brown's show, audience members will have an opportunity to meet him and purchase his books and other merchandise. Tickets are $20.
