The Michigan Department of Community Health has named Sen. Michelle McManus as one of seven "Public Policy Champions," and Lucy Tomasi-McGuire, RN, of Cadillac, as one of 12 "Hometown Health Heroes."
McManus was cited for her support of the booster-seat law.
Tomasi-McGuire, director of the Cadillac Area Community Health Clinic, was nominated for "Hometown Health Hero" by District Health Department #10 Medical Director Dr. James Wilson and Health Officer Linda VanGills.
Tomasi-McGuire was instrumental in getting the free Cadillac clinic started in 2002. It currently sees between 25 and 30 patients on a weekly basis. The clinic also has been used as a model for free clinics in Grayling and Manistee, and Tomasi-McGuire has shared her expertise and provided mentoring for the programs.

U.S Rep. Dave Camp, R.-Mich., was honored by the American Association of Kidney Patients for his work on a bill honoring organ donors.
The 2009 Medal of Excellence was given to Camp and Rep. Pete Stark, D-Calif., for their efforts in passing the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Gift of Life Medal Act.
This law created a new medal from the U.S. Mint that can be given to organ donors or their families in the case of deceased donors. The act is named in honor of former Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, D-Ohio, who died in 2008 and donated organ and tissue to more than 58 individuals.
