TRAVERSE CITY -- Emmy-winning writer and director Louis C.K. brings his stand-up comedy to the City Opera House Thursday.
Doors open at 7 p.m.; the show is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.
Louis C.K. has been on "Late Night with David Letterman" five times, "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno twice and is a former writer for "Saturday Night Live" and Conan O'Brien's show, on which he also performed.
His 2007 HBO comedy special, "Louis C.K.: Shameless" was followed by a second HBO performance, "Louis C.K.: Chewed Up." The current tour is "Louis C.K.: Hilarious."
He also has a role in Ricky Gervais' upcoming movie "This Side of the Truth," scheduled to be released later this year. Gervais has called Louis the "funniest stand-up working in America."
In a much-viewed and circulated appearance on Conan O'Brien's show, Louis "made a convincing case that capitalism's death knell might not be such a bad thing after all," said a story in the March 2 edition of Vanity Fair Daily.
He says we might be going back to donkeys as transportation, rotary phones and a lot less technology.
"Twitter and Facebook and MySpace; all that stuff makes you warped," he said. "We've all basically given ourselves data entry jobs. I've actually heard people say things like, "Aw ..., I have to update my Twitter." Really? You have to? That's a big priority for you?"
Louis began his comedy career in Boston with the likes of Denis Leary and Bill Burr; then moved on to writing, while still fitting in stand-up gigs whenever possible.
The Emmy award was for writing on "The Chris Rock Show." Louis C.K. has been nominated for an Emmy four other times. He's currently working on a sitcom, "Lucky Louie," for CBS.
"C.K.'s style is based on the brutal truth of day-to-day life," wrote Randy Harrison of 411Mania.com. "While some comedians are afraid to get too deep into their own lives and their own inadequacies, C.K. bares them all and speaks with honesty and depth while being one of the most daring and original comics on the circuit."
In December, Louis went to Kuwait and Iraq on a USO. tour. He's just now getting around to posting his blog entries.
Tickets are $30 and are available at the City Opera House, 106 E. Front St., by calling 941-8082 or by going to www.cityoperahouse.org.
