Bill Staines returning to Sleder's

TRAVERSE CITY -- Bill Staines will be in concert March 31 at Sleder's Family Tavern.

The On the Porch concert starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $13 in advance from Sleder's and Oryana Food Cooperative in Traverse City, or $15 at the door.

Holocaust drama at West Shore

SCOTTVILLE -- West Shore Community College presents "A Shayna Maidel," a Holocaust drama by celebrated American playwright Barbara Lebow.

"A Shayna Maidel," which translates from the Yiddish into "pretty girl," focuses on a family's struggle to cope with the Holocaust.

As a feature associated with this production, Miriam Katin, illustrator, author and herself a Holocaust survivor, will offer a presentation Friday at 8 p.m. in Center Stage Theater. Katin's memoir, "We Are on Our Own," recounts her and her mother's narrow escape from the Nazis during World War II.

"A Shayna Maidel" plays for one week only, March 13-16. Tickets for both the Katin presentation and the play are available at the WSCC box office, 845-3344.

'Swirl' set at Crooked Tree

PETOSKEY -- "Swirl" at Crooked Tree Arts Center presents "Early Thaw: Wines of the Southern Hemisphere" Thursday.

Swirl is a combination of wine and art. Held monthly, each program has a different seasonal theme. Galleries open at 6 p.m., with refreshments starting at 6:30.

Limited tickets are available. Cost is $10 in advance.

Contra Dance at Gilbert Lodge

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Bayside Travellers will hold an Contra Dance and Irish dance lesson Saturday at Gilbert Lodge.

A jamboree opens for all musicians from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Irish Ceili dance lessons are from 7 to 7:45, with Malarchy featuring Ruby John on fiddle and calling by Mike Clark set for 8 to 11 p.m.

No partner is necessary. Gilbert Lodge is at Twin Lakes Camp on N. Long Lake Road. Admission is $10, or $8 for members, with student and family rates available.

St. Patrick's Day event is benefit

LUDINGTON -- Mason County Habitat for Humanity celebrates St. Patrick's Day in style with an evening of fun, food and entertainment at its third annual "Paddy O'Habitat" festivities March 14.

Running from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Jamesport Brewing Company in Ludington, the event features appetizers and dancing to music by Acoustic Brew.

Tickets are $10, available from Habitat board members or by calling 843-7888. Proceeds will benefit future Habitat for Humanity projects.

Republican women slate meeting

Elk Rapids-- The Antrim County Republican Women will meet at noon March 10 at Siren Hall located at River and Cedar Streets.

All men and women are welcome to attend. Reservations are not required.

Dems executive board meeting

Traverse City -- The Grand Traverse Democrats will hold their March Executive Board meeting at 6 p.m. March 12 at the Michigan Education Association offices, 1745 Barlow. All interested Democrats are encouraged to attend and to bring non-perishable food items for donation to local food banks.

'Marty' showing as Morning Matinee

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Traverse Area District Library's Morning Matinee features "Marty" Tuesday and March 11 at 10 a.m.

The film stars Ernest Borgnine as an Italian-American butcher living in the Bronx with his mother. Unmarried at 34, the good-natured but socially awkward man faces constant pressure from family and friends who want him to get married. The screenings are held in the library meeting room.

Footliters to stage 'I Hate Hamlet'

CADILLAC -- The Footliters are presenting "I Hate Hamlet" opening Friday.

The production will be performed at Cadillac First Christian Church March 7, 8, 14 and 15 at 8 p.m., with 2 p.m. matinees on the Saturdays. There will also be a dinner theater performance at the Kettunen Center in Tustin on March 9, with dinner at 5 and the show at 6.

Dinner theater tickets are $26 for adults and $15 for children, and may be reserved by calling 829-3421.

Tickets to regular performances are $10, or $7 for students and senior citizens. They can be purchased at Brink's Custom Framing or the UPS Store in Cadillac, or at Baked Beans in Lake City. They're also sold online at www.cadillacfootliters.com.
