Northern Notes: Goodwill more than just store's name

Sharon Hill of Elk Rapids has proven it’s never too late to say thank-you.

Sharon was in Traverse City before Christmas doing some shopping and made the Goodwill Thrift Store her last stop. She spent quite a bit of time in the store, some of it checking out the furniture department. She made a selection there and while she was re-arranging her “stuff” accidentally left her purse in the furniture department. As she headed to the check-out she thought she heard her name over the speaker, but didn’t really pay attention. As she went to get her purse, she realized it was gone.

“I was pretty upset then, since I had just cashed a check for quite a sum,” Sharon wrote. “The clerks noticed me and they had my purse. What a relief! In these troubled times it is wonderful to find honest people. Goodwill should be very proud of their employees. I offered a reward, but they are not allowed (to accept) — just a hug and a thank-you. So ... Thank you! It’s a joy to shop at Goodwill.”

The City Opera House Board and staff would like to thank everyone who overwhelmingly supported its recent fundraising projects. City Opera House relies, as most nonprofit organizations do, on several avenues of funding.

In the fall, the City Opera House appealed to the community to support “Arts at the Heart.” To meet the annual support portion of the budget, the City Opera House requested donations, business sponsorships and grants.

“We are pleased to report that community support increased significantly in 2013 and for that we are extremely grateful,” the board and staff wrote. “2014 is off to a great start!”

City Opera House also announced that the $130,000 fund-raising goal for much needed backstage dressing rooms also was reached.
