Northern Notes: Baby Pantry observes Month of the Young Child

The Grand Traverse Baby Pantry will observe April as the Month of the Young Child by sponsoring a diaper drive.

Donations of disposable diapers may be dropped off throughout the month at: St. Francis Catholic Church, 1025 S. Union St.; Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1050 Peninsula Dr.; Tom’s West Bay, Acme, Munson Avenue, 14th Street and Interlochen locations; Family Fare Market, 905 E. Eighth St.; Oleson’s Food Stores, 3850 N. Long Lake Road and 1100 Hammond Road; and at The Presbyterian Church, 701 Westminster. Large sizes, 4 through 6 and 2T and 3T, are especially needed. The diapers will be distributed by the baby pantry.

Cash donations also are welcome and may be mailed to GT Baby Pantry, 507 W. Eighth St., Traverse City, MI 49684. Call Sally Hanley, 941-0655, to learn more.

A group of 10 ladies in Elk Rapids meet every Wednesday at Noble Pines Apartments, where they create lovely quilts. They call themselves the Wednesday Piecemakers and they donate their “beautiful works of art” to the Antrim Baby Pantry, located at St. Anthony Church in Mancelona.

“The moms who come to the pantry love these quilts and have expressed a desire to publicly thank the Wednesday Piecemakers for all their hard work and generosity,” a letter from the baby pantry stated. “Please let the world (or at least our part of it) know how very much their work and talents are appreciated.”

The Record-Eagle received a letter from Colby, a student in Kip Van Winkle’s fifth-grade class at Faith Christian School in Kearney, Neb., asking for help with a project.

The class is studying the 50 states and Colby chose Michigan. His assignment is to find out as much as possible about Michigan. He is asking readers to send maps, brochures, souvenirs or anything that will help him and the other students learn about the State of Michigan. Colby will use the information he receives in the class “States Fair” during the first week of May.
