Northern Notes: Emergency responders praised

Irene and George Saylor of Traverse City wrote to point out how fortunate Grand Traverse area residents are to have such a wonderful fire department, emergency personnel and ambulance service.

The couple wrote that when George had a heart problem recently he received extremely good care from members of these departments, plus the Munson Medical Center ER and the third floor cardiac care unit staffs.

“All the personnel, nurses, respiratory and doctors are just so great,” the Saylors wrote. “We here in Traverse City and beyond are so lucky to have such a wonderful facility. Thanks to all of you!”

After all the donation boxes were collected, the Traverse Health Clinic announced the final tally for its “Save a Smile” campaign.

The community generously donated a total of 9,975 items including 5,480 toothbrushes, 3,314 tubes of toothpaste and 1,180 dental floss packets during September atTom’s Food Markets, Northwestern Bank and Traverse Dental Associates. These sponsors provided promotional support in addition to serving as donation drop sites.

“Community response to dental needs among the many families served by the Traverse Health Clinic was overwhelming,” said Sherri Fenton, director of Development and Marketing at Traverse Health Clinic. “We more than doubled our previous high number of 4,183 items donated.”

Fenton attributed the increase in part to the generosity of new media partners 97.5 The Rock Station KLT, 94.3 Music Radio the FOX FM, and 106.7 and 105.5 ESPN Radio Northern Michigan. These stations together donated 720 30-second spot radio ads promoting the donation drive. This was in addition to a month of television ads run by five-year partner TV 9&10 News Helping Hands.

The donations translate to more preventive oral health care in the community and will allow Traverse Health Clinic to stock its six exam rooms with oral supplies for patients.

In addition to seeing patients at the clinic, outreach care is provided to the region’s homeless population and items will be shared with the Goodwill Inn and Safe Harbor locations.
