Dinner and cookie sale planned

Traverse City — Swiss steak and chicken top the menu for a dinner on Thursday, Dec. 9, while Christmas cookies will be sold on Saturday, Dec. 11, at Traverse Bay United Methodist Church.

The meal will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Prices are $8 for adults, $3.50 for children ages 4 to 10 and free for children ages 3 and younger. For details, call 946-5323.

A variety of Christmas cookies packaged for gift giving will be sold from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The price is $5.50 a dozen and proceeds will benefit the Traverse Bay United Methodist Women. Cookie selections are cherry chocolate chip oatmeal, Russian tea cakes, maple pecan, date-nut pinwheels and pumpkin chocolate chip. Advance orders may be placed by calling 947-3613 or 946-5323.

Both fundraisers will take place at the church, 1200 Ramsdell Road.

Whiffenpoofs today; Messiah Sunday

TRAVERSE CITY — The 32nd annual Messiah Sing will be held Sunday, Dec. 5, at Central United Methodist Church.

Anyone is welcome to sing; chorus members should show up for rehearsal at 2:45 p.m. Scores are available at the church. The performance is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

The soloists include soprano Lynne Church, mezzo-soprano Wendee Wolf-Schlarf, tenor Isaac Hurtado and bass Jeffery Norris.

Today, Dec. 4, at the church, 222 Cass St., there will be a performance by the Whiffenpoofs of Yale, an a capella chorus consisting of 14 Yale University seniors. The ensemble was established in 1909, beginning as a quartet that performed weekly at a campus tavern. Their repertoire, according to the group's website, includes a wide variety of tunes, from Beatles love songs to spirituals and traditional Yale compositions.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m. in the church sanctuary, located at 222 Cass St. Ticket prices are $25 for priority seating, $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Proceeds will benefit the church's music program. Call 946-5191.
