Community Arts and Crafts Fair is today

Traverse City — Northern Lakes Community Church is holding a Community Arts and Craft Fair.

The fair will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, Oct. 2, at the church, 5444 Herkner Road.

Long Lake Friends Church is 130

Traverse City — Anyone who has been touched by a ministry of Long Lake Friends Church is invited to the church's 130th anniversary celebration.

The milestone will be observed with a celebration of changed lives at a special service at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, at the church on the corner of North Long Lake and Church roads. A potluck luncheon will follow the service.

Animals will be blessed on Sunday

Traverse city — St. Francis of Assisi Parish will observe the feast day of St. Francis with a Blessing of the Animals.

The blessing ceremony will start at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, at the church 1025 S. Union St. For details, call the church 947-4620.

New season of 'Growing With God'

Lake Leelanau — The "Growing With God" program will launch its new season on Tuesday, Oct. 5.

The program is for children from birth through kindergarten and their parents. Everyone is welcome.

"Growing With God" Story Hour meets the first Tuesday of the month through May and "Growing with God" sessions are held the third Tuesday of each month through May, starting Oct. 19. Both sessions meet from 9 to 10 a.m. in the St. Mary School Library, 303 St. Marys St.

Church Women United will meet

Traverse City — Old Mission Peninsula United Methodist Church will host the Thursday, Oct. 7, meeting of Church Women United.

The meeting will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church, 16426 Center Road. Attendees should bring a dish to share and their own table service for the fellowship luncheon, and food pantry items for the Salvation Army.

Dinner benefits local mission outreach

Grawn — The Grawn United Methodist Women will sponsor a Swiss-steak dinner to benefit local mission outreach.

The meal will be served from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, at the church, 1260 W. Silver Lake Road. The cost is $7 for adults, $3 for ages 5 to 12, and free for ages 4 and younger. The public is invited.

Rummage sale at Atwood church

Atwood — Atwood Christian Reformed Church's annual rummage sale will raise money for the church building fund.

The sale will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at the church, U.S. 31, 10 miles south of Charlevoix. Household goods, produce, baked goods and more will be available. For details, call 599-3290.

Pancake Day at Salvation Army

Traverse City — Pancake Day is back at the Salvation Army.

All-you-can-eat pancakes will be served from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Salvation Army, 1239 Barlow St. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 12 and younger. There also will be a silent auction and bake sale. All proceeds will go toward missions.

Fundraiser for Benzie Habitat

Arcadia — A barbecue chicken dinner on Saturday, Oct. 9, with benefit the work of Habitat for Humanity of Benzie County.

The meal will be served from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Blaine Christian Church on the corner of Joyfield and Putney roads. The cost is $10 for adults and free for children 10 and younger. Take-outs will be available.

Dinner and concert for roof repairs

Elberta — Elberta United Methodist Church invites the community to help it " raise the roof."

A fund-raising dinner and concert will be hosted Saturday, Oct. 9, at the church, 555 Lincoln Ave. The meal will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and includes chicken and noodles, biscuits, tossed salad, desserts and beverages. A concert by soloist Lisa Packard will start at 6:30 p.m. Donations toward church roof repairs will be accepted.

Sign up for Ave Maria dinner

Traverse City — Reservations are being accepted to the next Northern Michigan Ave Maria University Founders Club dinner.

Registration will start at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, at Immaculate Conception Church, 720 Second St. Mass will be celebrated at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and a program on Ave Maria University's sister campus in Nicaragua. The program will be presented by Jack Sites, AMU vice president of academic affairs and the coordinator for the Latin American campus.

Best-selling author visits TC church

Traverse City — In 1989, Don Piper's car was hit head-on by a semi-truck. He was pronounced dead by four sets of paramedics but by some miracle was brought back. During the time he was dead, Piper was granted a glimpse of Heaven and wrote about it in "90 Minutes In Heaven -A True Story of Death and Life."

Best-selling author Piper will share his experiences in a free program from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, at Bay Pointe Community Church, 6880 Secor Road. Bay Pointe Pastor Nick Twomey also will speak briefly about his recent trip to India with Big Life Ministries and an offering will be taken to benefit Big Life.

Openings at women's retreat

Old Testament lessons at seminar

Faith Missionary Baptist Church will hold a special one-day seminar Saturday, Oct. 2.
