Unity Church hosts holiday activities

Traverse City — Holiday activities at Unity Church will start on Sunday, Dec. 12, with an original play performed by the Unity Players.

"Santa On Trial," written and directed by Libby Robold, will be presented at 10:30 a.m. It will feature both adult and youth performers.

A Christmas potluck and the second annual Giving Sunday will be on Sunday, Dec. 19. During the meal, church members will be given a choice of agencies to receive any donations they wish to make.

A Christmas Eve Candle Lighting Ceremony will start at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 24. A visit from the "real" Santa Claus will follow.

The Sunday, Dec. 26, service at 10:30 a.m. will include a traditional Burning Bowl Ceremony and a performance by Claudia Schmidt. Individuals are invited to make lists of changes they wish to make in the new year to be burned during the ceremony.

Unity Church will close the year by participating in the World Healing Meditation on Friday, Dec. 31. The goal is to have continual prayer for peace in the world by having prayer assigned to time zones around the world. Unity will open at 7 a.m., with prayers for peace from 7 to 8 a.m.

One-man play on John Wesley's life

Frankfort — Frankfort United Methodist Church will host a presentation of playwright Brad L. Smith's "The Man from Aldersgate."

The one-man play is based on the life of John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church. It will be performed by B.J. Johnston from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 13 at the church, 537 Crystal Ave. A dessert reception will follow.

Admission is free, but an offering will be collected to help defray expenses.

Bayview Players stage dinner theater

Traverse City — The Bayview Players will present their sixth annual Christmas Dinner Theater.

"If You Just Believe" was written by local author Tammy Tarsa. It tells the story of how 12 lives intersect during 36 hours stranded at an airport during a blizzard and features songs from a variety of composers.

The production will be staged Thursday through Sunday, Dec. 16-19, at Bayview Wesleyan Church, 720 Wayne St. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and at 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $13 each or $96 for a table for eight. Call 947-3792.

Men's Ministry will hold card night

Traverse City — The Men's Ministry at Northern Lakes Community Church will host a card night on Saturday, Dec. 18, for adult men college age and older.

The evening will include a euchre tournament and possibly some poker starting at 6 p.m. at the church, 5444 Herkner Road. Pizza and soft drinks will be provided. Players should bring a non-perishable food item for the church's food pantry.

Concert spotlights traditional music

Acme — An Advent/Christmas Concert will feature traditional music including works by John Rutter, Joseph Martin and Amy Grant.

The parish choir, handbell choir and instrumentalist Mark Tafelsky will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19, at Christ the King Parish, 3801 Shore Road. The public is invited and admission is by donation. For details, call the church, 938-9214.

Church presents musical celebration

Frankfort — Herring Lake Baptist Church will celebrate the holiday season with a musical performance on Sunday, Dec. 19.

The "Lord of Glory" Christmas Cantata, directed by Darlene Cunningham, will be performed at 6 p.m. at the church, 4433 Scenic Highway (M-22). The children's choir will participate and there also will be instrumental duets by the church's teen members. Refreshments will be served.

Live Nativity retells the Christmas story

Atwood — Atwood Christian Reformed Church will retell the story of the first Christmas through its Live Nativity performance.

The Christmas story will be related through acting and music at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19, outdoors at the church, U.S. 31, 12 miles south of Charlevoix.

Refreshments will be served in the church fellowship hall following the presentations.

Puppet ministry team stages musical

Mancelona — The Puppets of Praise ministry team will present a Christmas musical on Sunday, Dec. 19, at the Antrim Church of Christ.

The doors open at 4:30 p.m. for the 5 p.m. performance of "The Plane Truth About Christmas." Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

Program heralds Christmas week

Beulah — The community is invited to prepare for Christmas at a presentation of the traditional Christmas story.

An all-ages cast will share the Christmas story at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 19, at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 8190 Lincoln Road. The program will feature solos, special instrumental music, live sheep, shepherds, the Three Kings, angels and a real Baby Jesus.
