Trinity Lutheran hosts guest speaker

FRANKFORT -- The Rev. Dr. Philip E. Hemke, director of church relations for Lutheran Social Services of Michigan, will be the guest speaker on Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Hemke served as senior pastor at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Bloomfield Hills from 1989 to January 2008. He now is liaison between Lutheran Social Services and the two Lower Michigan synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

The Rev. Hemke will reflect on the message "Power Failure" (Mark 6:14-29) at the 8:30 and 11 a.m. services at the church, 955 James St.

There will be no summer Sunday school.

Devotionals with a Dixieland beat

TRAVERSE CITY -- Dixieland Devotionals will begin Wednesday at The Presbyterian Church and will continue on Wednesdays through Aug. 12.

The evening will begin with a mini-Dixieland concert by The Backroom Gang at 6:50 p.m. at the church, 701 Westminster A short devotional service will follow with four or five familiar hymns accompanied by The Backroom Gang.

Refreshments will be served and a free-will offering will be collected. Proceeds will benefit Love INC, the Women's Resource Center, Food Rescue of Northwest Michigan and Bethany Christian Services.

Talk and slide show on Cambodia

TRAVERSE CITY -- Bhavia Wagner, author, travel guide and founder of Friendship With Cambodia, will discuss the practice of socially responsible tourism and how to use a trip abroad to help local people.

Wagner first went to Cambodia in 1991. In 2003, she started Friendship with Cambodia, a nonprofit organization based in Eugene, Ore., that provides humanitarian aid to Cambodia.

"Touring Cambodia-The Socially Responsible Way" will start at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Friends Meeting House at the corner of Fifth and Oak streets. Fair trade crafts from Cambodia also will be on sale. To learn more, contact Terri DeFilippo, 228-6030 or terridef@yahoo.com.

Dinner menu will feature Swiss steak

Grawn -- Grawn United Methodist Church will host a Swiss steak dinner on Friday.

The meal will be served from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the church, 1260 W. Silver Lake Road.

The price is $7 for adults, $3 for children ages 5 to 12, and free for children ages 4 and younger. Proceeds will benefit the church. Call 943-8353 for more information.

Community invited to church yard sale

TRAVERSE CITY -- Peninsula Bible Church and Noah's Ark Day Care Center are planning a yard sale.

The sale will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 18 at the church, 430 Fair St., across from Kid's Kove at the Civic Center. It will feature furniture, clothing, toys, books and miscellaneous items. Breakfast and lunch will be available and there will be a bake sale. A car wash also will be held at 1234 Titus St.
