Traverse Symphony presents family concert

TRAVERSE CITY — Hear an octet version of Modest Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" on Sunday, Jan. 13, at 3 p.m. in the City Opera House in Traverse City.

Conducted by Tom Riccobono and performed by Traverse Symphony Orchestra musicians, the free performance features music in a light-hearted, family-friendly atmosphere.

Mussorgsky composed the music to depict an imaginary tour of an art collection, with each movement representing a different work of art. To accompany the performance, 85 area students drew nearly 200 works of art while listening to a recording of "Pictures at an Exhibition." Each drawing will be shown during the performance as part of a slide show.

"The artwork created by the kids is great," said Operations Manager Rick Jaissle. "Being able to display it during the performance adds to the atmosphere that Mussorgsky intended to create. This will be a great show for all ages."

Six sessions were conducted — two at Blackbird Arts Studio in Traverse City and four at The Children's House, a Montessori School in Traverse City. Blackbird Arts worked with students ages 6-12 and asked them to explore the relationship between painting and music, and how the melodies might be translated into brush strokes.

Pre-concert activities include a musical instrument petting zoo and other music-themed activities from KidzArt and Kindermusik. Doors open at 2:30 p.m.
