Art Rapids! donates painting to honor ex-prosecutor Koop

ELK RAPIDS — The Antrim County Courthouse has a new painting — a watercolor presented last week by Art Rapids! as a memorial to former county prosecutor Charlie Koop, who died Aug. 6.

Koop, 63, served as prosecutor for 23 years.

Longtime Elk Rapids artist Joani Braun painted Sam Soet’s “Hardwoods” sculpture during the Walk of Art’s grand opening celebration in July and donated it to Art Rapids!, the village’s art and culture organization.

When Koop died a week later, the arts board voted to give it to the county board of commissioners in his memory. Elk Rapids gallery owner Barb Mullaly framed it with a small memorial plaque that says “In Memory of Charlie Koop, a friend of Art Rapids! and the Walk of Art.” It will hang in the the commissioners’ meeting room.

Braun and Koop’s widow, Chrissy, attended the Oct. 10 presentation.

“The painting represents three artists — Joani Braun, Sam Soet, and Charlie Koop,” said Sherri DeCamp, Art Rapids! vice president at the presentation. “Charlie was an art major in college, a painter, sculptor, weaver, decorator and a fan of the arts.”

The Walk of Art is located at Elk Rapids Day Park, a 15-acre stretch of hardwoods, pines, dunes, wildflowers and beach extending a quarter-mile along East Grand Traverse Bay.
