'Blusion' is headed for TC

TRAVERSE CITY — She calls it “blusion” — fusion of blues, jazz, boogie-woogie and country — and Deanna Bogart is bringing it to the Milliken Auditorium.

Bogart, a skilled multi-instrumentalist, will take a seat behind a nine-foot Steinway grand piano on the stage at 8 p.m. Saturday. It’s a show that promises to appeal to a wide audience, not just blues fans, said Eugene Jenneman, executive director of the Dennos Museum Center.

“I expect that they’re going to get a pretty powerful concert,” he said. “She covers a little broader range in terms of style.”

Bogart was born in Detroit and lived there briefly before moving away. She again lived in the city for a year when she was 16. Since then she’s lived in several cities across the country and toured with bands for 35 years.

Along the way, she developed her unique outlook toward music.

“I just don’t impose musical roadblocks to myself,” she said. “Now, i’m gluten free, dairy free and genre free. Music is music, we all use the same 12 notes.”

Bogart has played in venues from Detroit to Kalamazoo, but never Traverse City. Saturday’s show will be an exciting first for more reasons than one, she said.

The Saturday show will likely be the Deanna Bogart Band’s only appearance in the state in 2014 and will be extra special since Bogart will reunite with a friend she lost touch with more than 30 years ago when she moved away from the state for the second time.

“It’s one of those things you can’t put words to,” she said from her home in California before leaving to travel to Michigan and kickoff a three week tour. “That will make it even a little extra special.”

If you’re interested in seeing Bogart’s only Michigan performance scheduled for 2014, tickets cost $25 in advance and $28 at the door. For more information, or to buy tickets, call the museum box office at 995-1553.
