Film series will feature musicals

NORTHPORT -- Flix at the Northport Community Arts Center will kick off a "Summer of Musicals" with "The Gold Diggers of 1935."

The Busby Berkeley musical will be shown at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the NCAC, at Northport Public School, 104 Wing St. Donations will be accepted to help cover expenses. The series will continue at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursdays from May through September.

Beer and Brat Fest at Crystal Mountain

THOMPSONVILLE -- The Michigan Beer and Brat Festival will feature samples from as many as 40 Michigan craft beers from microbreweries across that state.

The festival will be open from 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturday at Crystal Mountain Resort. You must be 21 to enter and admission is $20, which includes a commemorative mug, plus tickets for beer, brats and Bavarian pretzels. Live entertainment by Egon also is on the schedule.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament

CENTRAL LAKE -- Kids and teen-agers are invited to register for a one-on-one tournament in the Nintendo Wii game Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

The "Smash-A-Thon" will get under way at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the library, 7900 Maple St. Players will compete under set conditions using Gamecube controllers and fight until one player wins.

There is no charge but players must register before 11 a.m. For details, call 383-2723 or 544-2517.

Art Center offers watercolor study

FRANKFORT -- Instructor Susan Lingg will help painters of all levels try various watercolor techniques in "Exploring the Watercolor Media Through Small Studies" at the Crystal Lake Art Center.

The one-day session will be offered from 10:30 a.m. to noon May 29 or June 5. Participants will receive three 5-inch by 7-inch watercolor note cards with envelopes and instruction in using glazes/washes, salt, the spatter technique, negative painting approach and more.

Everyone will leave with at least two finished pieces. The cost is $35 for art center members and $45 for non-members, which includes paints, brushes and paper.

City Opera House hosts comedian

TRAVERSE CITY -- Kathleen Madigan will bring her stand-up comedy routine to the City Opera House for one performance.

Madigan's stand-up specials on HBO and Comedy Central have earned rave reviews and her latest CD/DVD, "In Other Words," is one of the most downloaded comedy albums of 2006-2007. She is a regular guest on ''The Tonight Show'' with Jay Leno, ''The Late Show'' with David Letterman, VH-1, E!, and CNN. She also is a mainstay on Comedy Central where she recently debuted a new one-hour special and appeared on ''The World Stands Up, USO Comedy Tour,'' ''The World Comedy Tour'' and ''Comedy Central Presents.''

Madigan will perform at 8 p.m. on June 7 at the City Opera House, 106 E. Front St.

Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at the Opera House box office.
