'Woman in Black' will benefit WRC

TRAVERSE CITY -- Tickets still are available for benefit performances of "The Woman in Black" at the new Grand Trunk Theatre.

The ghost story will be staged at 8 tonight and Saturday by Theatre North at its new facility, 620 Railroad Place at the old train depot off East Eighth Street and Woodmere Avenue. Proceeds will benefit the Women's Resource Center.

Tickets are $25 each and may be purchased by calling the Women's Resource Center, 941-1210 or at http://www.womensresourcecenter.org.

NMC offers a 'Chance to Dance'

TRAVERSE CITY -- Beginner and experienced dancers are invited to "Chance to Dance" Fridays at Northwestern Michigan College.

Dances will be held from 10 p.m. to midnight beginning tonight and continuing on Fridays through June 20 in the NMC physical education building. There will be no dance on May 23. Participants will practice learned steps and learn new ones with dance instructor Mykl Werth.

Admission is $5 at the door and no partner is necessary. Attendees should wear slippery-soled shoes. Call 995-1700.

Exhibit inspired by trip around Superior

PETOSKEY -- "Reflections of Superior," an exhibit featuring the work of seven artists who sailed a homemade wooden sailboat the circumference of Lake Superior, opens Saturday at the Crooked Tree Arts Center, 461 E. Mitchell St.

In 2001 and 2003, a rotating crew of artists sailed aboard the Alwihta, a homemade replica of an historic wooden sailboat built by Fritz Seegers of Kalamazoo from ice-out in June until the storms of October. Included in the exhibition are drawing/digital works by Fritz Seegers, etchings by Ladislav Hanka of Kalamazoo, woodblock prints by Mary Brodbeck of Kalamazoo, paper constructions by Cynthia Coté of Calumet, oil paintings by Brent Spink of Kalamazoo, a video documentary by Mark Spink of Colorado, and fiber art by Phyllis Fredendall of Houghton.

There will be an opening reception Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. On Tuesday, the captain of the Alwihta, Fritz Seegers, will present a Coffee at Ten talk at 10 a.m. in the West Gallery. Reflections artist Mary Brodbeck will be at CTAC on June 30 and July 1 conducting a two-day workshop on Japanese Woodblock Printmaking.

Harvestmen bring music to Cadillac

CADILLAC -- The Harvestmen, featuring a variety of styles that fall loosely into American roots, bluegrass, country, swing, and blues, will perform in a Gopherwood concert Saturday, 8 p.m., at the Elks Club.

The Harvestmen perform songs that tell a variety of stories, about salty dogs, shipwrecks and other escapades.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students ages 13-20 in advance and $12 & $6 at the door. Children 12 and under are admitted free with an adult. Advance tickets are available at Persnickety in Cadillac or by calling 775-2813.

Painting exhibit helps butterflies

TRAVERSE CITY -- Angela Schuler's recent collection of paintings, "Almost Lost," depicts endangered butterflies and will be on display in The Mercado in Building 50 starting Monday.

During May, five percent of each sale will be donated to the Grand Traverse Conservation District.
