Richie Havens sets Opera House show

TRAVERSE CITY -- Richie Havens is coming to the City Opera House for a performance Friday at 8 p.m.

Students serenade moms at concert

TRAVERSE CITY -- Interlochen Arts Academy student musicians and vocalists will present a free Mother's Day concert May 11.

The concert, part of the "Live! Music @ the Library" series, will begin at 3 p.m. at the Traverse Area District Library, 610 Woodmere Ave. Performers include vocalist Rachel Borovik, pianist Gil Chapman, guitarist Peter Wagner, bassist Max Beckman and percussionist Gabe Smith.

Anime Convention is a first here

TRAVERSE CITY -- A first-ever Northern Michigan Anime Convention will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. at Northwestern Michigan College.

Guest speaker Tiffany Grant of "Neon Genesis Evangelion" fame will speak on panels and sign autographs. Also participating will be Baka Savant.

The $15 cost to attend includes live role-play events. The convention will feature a dealer's room, fan artists room, anime screenings and a lunchtime maid café.

Noel Coward farce at Crooked Tree

PETOSKEY -- Little Traverse Civic Theatre will present the Noel Coward farce, "Blithe Spirit," opening May 8.

Performances will be held at the Crooked Tree Arts Center, with 2 p.m. matinees May 11 and 18 and 8 p.m. shows May 8 through 10 and 15 through 17.

Writer coming to Opera House

TRAVERSE CITY -- Poet and musician Derrick Brown will perform May 16 at the City Opera House.

A former paratrooper for the 82nd Airborne, gondolier, magician and fired weatherman, Brown now travels the world performing his poetry. Brown has won several awards, including the California's Independent Book Critic's Award in 2004, and six first-place finishes in Venice Beach, England and Germany. He has published several books, including "Born in the Year of the Butterfly Knife," and most recently, "I Love You Is Back."

Local musician Mike Moran will open for Brown at 7:30 p.m. After Brown's show, audience members will have an opportunity to meet him and purchase his books and other merchandise.

Lunafest Film Fest set at Ramsdell

MANISTEE -- The Lunafest Film Festival will be held Saturday at the Ramsdell Theatre.

Beginning at 6:30 p.m., the evening includes films, cocktails and desserts.

Gilbert Lodge is contra dance site

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Bayside Travellers will hold a contra dance on Saturday at Gilbert Lodge on the grounds of Twin Lakes Camp.

Music will be provided by the Rhythm Billies, with Pat Hoejke calling. No partner is necessary and dances will be taught.

A jamboree runs from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., with dance lessons from 7 to 8 and the dance from 8 to 11.

Cabaret show at Grayling Ramada

GRAYLING -- The Grayling Promotional Association presents its final show of the season Thursday with Steppin' Out at the Ramada Inn.

Crooner Rick Reuther and chanteuse Mary Rademacher will present their Cabaret show with a tribute to duets from classic movies, Broadway and famous pairs.

Tickets for the dinner show are $30, available at the Grayling Regional Chamber of Commerce while supplies last.

Guyton to visit Manistee school

MANISTEE -- Tyree Guyton will visit Manistee High School at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
