Education Newsmakers: 11/30/2010

-- Kerry LaLone, a social studies teacher at Cherryland Middle School in Elk Rapids, was received a professional development scholarship from MEEMIC Insurance Co. She used the money to attend the 2010 Michigan Council for Social Studies' annual conference.

-- The Traverse City West Senior High School Key Club raised more than $1,000 for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) by participating in the Trick-or-Treat UNICEF fundraising program.

-- Traverse City Area Public Schools Director of Human Resources Cindy Berck has completed all requirements for a doctorate in education from Northcentral University. The degree has a specialization in education leadership. She has a bachelor's degree in education from Butler University and a master's degree in educational administration from Central Michigan University.

-- The following is Traverse City Central High School's Debate Team final standings at the Dexter Delight Tournament: Dylan Cooper, first-place varsity speaker; Katie Stanton, eighth-place varsity speaker; Kevin Trippe, ninth-place varsity speaker; Clara Trippe, first-place novice speaker; Samantha Donohue, sixth-place novice speaker; Callie Chappel, eighth-place novice speaker; Emily Cain, 10th-place novice speaker.

In the team standings, four TC Central High School Novice Teams advanced to the quarterfinals, composing half of the eight-team bracket: Hanna Casperson/Callie Chappel and Samantha Donohue/Evie Leadens lost in the quarterfinals, while Elena Rothney/Clara Trippe locked out Emily Cain/Allyson Schultz and advanced to the semifinals, where they lost to eventual Novice Champ Midland Dow.
