---- — -- The following were named October Students of the Month at Traverse City East Middle School: sixth-graders Mae Smith, Carly Burns, Clay Myers, Ben Howard, Dustin Solberg; seventh-graders Ashley Grice, Dawson Peek, Travis McCombs, Veronica Torres; eighth-graders Grace Stanton, Rachel Moore, Tony Hogue, Sean Williams.

-- The following Traverse City West band students auditioned for and were selected to the Michigan School Band & Orchestra Association All-State Band: Ian McIntyre, clarinet 3rd chair, All-State Band; Cam Forton, trombone, All-State jazz band; Lizzy Vana, french horn 2nd chair, All-State Band; Aaron Wright, trombone 1st chair, All-State Band (1st chair for the second year in a row); Casey Voss, percussion, honorable mention; Krista Cole, piccolo 1st chair, All-State Middle School Band; Stephanie Long, percussion 1st chair, All-State Middle School Band.

-- Kayla Schultz, of Cheboygan, is program director of Euphonics, an award-winning, Albion College student-led a cappella musical organization that features several northern Michigan musicians. The Euphonics won First Place in the Mixed Groups category at the Grand Rapids A Cappella Unplugged Showcase recently, and also won the award for best choreography. Schultz, a soprano/alto, is in her fourth year as a member of the Euphonics and is active in many facets of campus life including tourguiding, Model United Nations, and the Asian Awareness Group. Her love of singing is only superseded by her obsession with any and all things Aerosmith.

-- Traverse City Area Public Schools' Montessori at Glenn Loomis participated in the Movin' Up Qualifying Tournament, part of the recent FIRST Lego League Tournaments, at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie. Montessori Microbes #8998 took First Place Overall Championship and Teamwork Award. Two teams from Traverse City West Middle School and Old Mission Peninsula School participated in the Qualifying Tournament in Grandville. West Middle School Terror #5738 won First Place for Outstanding Research Quality, Second Place Overall, and Second Place for Robot Performance; West Middle School Techno Titans #10053 won the Judge's Choice Award. Old Mission Peninsula Panthers #8971 won Third Place for Robot Performance and the Inspiration Award. Montessori Microbes and TC Terror qualified to advance to the state-level tournament.
