Remembrance ceremony offered
TRAVERSE CITY -- Michael's Place is offering "A Night of Remembering" Dec. 7 at Immaculate Conception Elementary School, 218 Vine St., in Traverse City. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with the ceremony beginning at 7 p.m.
The event is open to anyone in the community who would like to light a candle in memory of a loved one who has died. Candles will be provided; participants are encouraged to bring a picture of their loved one to display during the ceremony. For details call 947-6453.
TCAPS sets Indian Ed. Parent meetings
TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse City Area Public Schools' Indian Education Parent Committee will hold its next meeting at 6 p.m. Dec. 7, open to all parents and guardians of Native American Indian students.
The committee was established to provide input and assistance in developing proposals; to review the planning, implementation and evaluation of programs; and to develop increased awareness of new and existing Indian Education Programs.

Financial Aid Night set at Central HS
TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse City Central High School will host Financial Aid Night for seniors and their parents at 7 p.m. Dec. 8 in the school cafeteria.
Presenters from the Northwestern Michigan College Financial Aid Office will discuss the process for obtaining assistance with expenses, as well as the importance of completing the new electronic Free Application for Federal Student Aid application.
GTARSP kick off holidays at meeting
TRAVERSE CITY -- Grand Traverse Area Retired School Personnel will hold their final luncheon meeting of the year at 12:30 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Holiday Inn on E. Front St., Traverse City. Meetings resume in April 2010.

Meijer offers Great Choices competition
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Meijer Great Choices Student Film Festival competition for high school students is accepting short public service announcements for more than $20,000 in cash prizes.
Student filmmakers submit a 30-second PSA promoting positive choices in the areas of character education, healthy lifestyles and/or celebrating diversity, targeted toward students in grades K-6 or 7-12.

Veterans may be awarded diplomas
TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse City Area Public Schools may offer military veterans of WWII and the Korean War a high school diploma under Public Act 181 of 2001.
The law permits a WWII veteran who left high school between Dec. 16, 1940, and Dec. 31, 1946, for immediate military service and did not subsequently receive a high school degree to now apply for a diploma. Korean War veterans who left high school between June 27, 1950, and Jan. 31, 1955, may also apply. Family members may apply on behalf of a living or deceased veteran.
The application requires a copy of the veteran's discharge from military service indicating honorable service between the dates above. The applicant's signature certifies the remaining information. Call 933-1718.
NMC students want 'real-world' work
TRAVERSE CITY -- Nonprofit groups can submit design, art direction and new media projects for consideration as pro bono Visual Communications class projects during the spring 2010 semester at Northwestern Michigan College.
Submissions are due by Dec. 14; nonprofits will be notified by Dec. 21 and the projects will be completed by the end of the semester in May 2010.
The project will be free for the nonprofits selected; the goal is a "real-world assignment" for the students.
Potential projects could include logos, brochures, ad campaigns, packaging, graphic design, branding, posters, announcements, invitations, Web animations, Flash animations, exhibition design, TV commercials or anything relating to visual communications, commercial art, illustration and web design.
In the past, NMC students have created the initial design for the "Bay Bucks" local currency, film trailers and the Web site for the Mother-Baby International Film Festival, streetscape signage and metalwork bridge design for the city of Alden and a redesigned TART Trails newsletter

Documentary screening is Dec. 3
TRAVERSE CITY -- A screening of a documentary from the American Indian perspective will be held Dec. 3.
"We Shall Remain: From Plymouth to Wounded Knee, a Tale of Surival," will be shown beginning at 6 p.m. in Room 215 at University Center on Cass Road in Traverse City. A discussion will follow. The movie is presented by Grand Valley State University.
The program has been approved by the Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative and will count for 2.0 clock hours.

Y offering School's Out this week
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Grand Traverse Bay YMCA will offer its School's Out program Wednesday and Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday. The Y will be closed on Thanksgiving.
