Students of the Month: 11/10/2009
The following have been named Students of the Month by the Kiwanis Club of Traverse City.
-- Audrey Lyman, a senior at Traverse City Central High School, is the daughter of Richard and Laura Lyman. Audrey is a member of National Honor Society and SCI-MA-TECH. She has participated in varsity tennis; musicals including "High School Musical," "South Pacific," and "Pirates of Penzance"; the Choral-Aires and Chorale; the varsity debate team; and Rendezvous the Jazz Club. She enjoys guitar, reading and snowboarding, and hopes to attend a small liberal arts college where she can study biology/medicine and continue music and tennis.
-- Nicholas "Nick" Krajenka, a senior at Traverse City Central High School, is the son of Larry and Yvonne Krajenka. He has served as an intermediate ambassador with the National Cherry Festival for five years. He is a member of the varsity football team, varsity track and field, and was a member of the symphony band in ninth grade. Nick has participated in the mentor program for East Middle School transition and is a member of the National Honor Society. He participated in Boys State as a delegate last summer, after being nominated by his principal and high school staff. Nick enjoys golfing, weight lifting, coin and stamp collecting, and playing cards. He would like to attend Michigan State University or Central Michigan University to pursue a degree in hospitality/business management.
-- Lauren Aprill, a senior at Traverse City West High School, is the daughter of Jeff and Sandy Aprill. She has served as a member of the National Honor Society and the National Art Honor Society; as a freshman mentor with the Kickoff Program; and as a counselor at Camp New Day for elementary children with incarcerated parents. Lauren participated in short-term mission trips to Haiti and youth mission work in Luther, Mich., Rockford, Ill., and Henderson Settlement, Ky. Lauren has received the National Merit Commended Scholar award; was a first-place winner of the Kiwanis Community Services Essay Contest; was named a 2009 AP Scholar; and won a Key Club Award for most hours of community service. She enjoys photography, mission work, quilting, reading, writing, serving God, spending time with her church family, and shopping at Goodwill. Lauren is undecided about her college and career plans.
-- Trevor Tooley, a senior at Traverse City West High School, is the son of Richard and Anne Tooley. He has served as a member of the Z-Club and as a National Honor Society ambassador. He has participated in varsity tennis, basketball and baseball. Trevor has earned honors including academic excellence in all three sports, a coaches award for basketball, MVP for baseball in his sophomore year; and participated in the Freshman State Band Festival and the National Student Leadership Conference. Trevor enjoys sports, and especially likes to ride his WaveRunner and go boating in the summer. In the winter he likes to ski, and he enjoys video games year-round. He hopes to attend the University of Michigan to study a medical profession.
-- Emily Raetz, a senior at Traverse City Christian School, is the daughter of Richard and Linda Raetz. She has served as a Student Council representative and the CEO of the FIRST Robotics competition. Emily has participated in school plays including "Pride and Prejudice" and "Our Miss Brooks," and played volleyball and basketball through 10th grade. She currently plays tennis and takes ballet. An honor student since fifth grade, Emily has participated in mission trips, and enjoys reading, ballet, backpacking trips, boating, watching sporting events and many outdoor activities. She hopes to attend Hope College and major in chemistry or biology through the pre-dental program, then attend University of Michigan's School of Dentistry to eventually become an orthodontist.
-- Jason Send, a senior at Traverse City Christian School, is the son of Roger and Karen Send. He has served as class vice president through all of high school; as a Sunday school teacher; sound technician for school plays and the school's Worship Team. Jason has participated in mission trips to Guyana, New Orleans and Mississippi. He plays basketball and varsity soccer, and participated in the Gothia Cup Soccer Tournament in Sweden and played in soccer club tours in Germany, Holland and Belgium. He was the soccer MVP for the 2006 team in the Litiz, Pa., Summer College Showcase; served as soccer team captain, and was the leading scorer in grades 8-12. Jason enjoys soccer and snowmobiling, and plans to earn a business degree at Cornerstone University.
