Education Newsmakers: 11/10/2009

-- Local students Jessica Czerny, Nataliya Chekhovskay, Timothy Cary, Shanna Dine, Joseph Morrow, Madison Dowswell, Kelli Edson, Jessica Griffin, Kirstie Johnson, Kacie Lumley, Michael Teboe and Jason Corner received academic honors for the semester that ended August 2009 at Ferris State University and Kendall College of Art and Design.

-- The following local students recently graduated from Ferris State University, Kendall College of Art and Design, and/or the College of Professional and Technological Studies: Jeffrey Pifer, Timothy Cary, Melissa Sudol, Amber Buist and Corey Couturier.

-- Jennifer S. Redumski of Interlochen recently graduated from Baker College with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration.

-- Four local students recently participated in The Pull at Hope College, one of the nation's oldest college traditions: Dustin Baker, Katherine Kirby, Kristen Marsh and Alexander Zelinski. Baker, son of Denis and Amy Baker of Cedar and a graduate of Glen Lake High School, served as a puller for the class of 2013 team. Kirby, daughter of James and Angela Kirby of Williamsburg, and Marsh, daughter of Bill and Debbie Marsh of Traverse City, both 2008 graduates of Traverse City St. Francis Catholic High School, served as moralers for the class of 2012 team. Zelinski, a senior and son of Alan and Mary Zelinski of Traverse City, was a Pull coach for the class of 2012 team. He is also a graduate of St. Francis Catholic High School. This year's Pull was won by the class of 2012 team.

-- Petoskey native Robert "Robbie" Rensel is the most recent recipient of a scholarship from The Jones Dairy Farm Scholarship Fund at The Culinary Institute of America. Since arriving at the CIA, Rensel has competed in the Skills USA Competition; has made the Dean's List; was the group leader of his A.O.S. Class; received the prestigious Frances Roth Leadership Award; has been the president of the Gourmet Society for three years; has been active in both the Dinner Club and the Ice Carving Club; and is the vice president of public relations for Marist College's Toastmasters club.
