Central's 'Pirates' is rescheduled
TRAVERSE CITY -- Performances of "Pirates of Penzance" at Traverse City Central High School have been shifted a week due to the school's flu closings.
Performances are now scheduled for Nov. 12 through 14 and Nov. 19 through 21 at 7 p.m. Matinees performances will be held at 3 p.m. Nov. 15 and Nov. 22.

Women's conference is Friday at NMC
TRAVERSE CITY -- A one-day conference for women is being offered Friday.
"Reinventing the Rest of Your Life" will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Northwestern Michigan College. The day will look at "the next chapters of your life," and will feature speakers, guided reflection, resource booths, networking and food.
Life coaches Nancy Ballinger and Megan Raphael will present; Rabbi Chava Bahle is a guest speaker.

Long Lake school holds craft show
TRAVERSE CITY -- A craft show will be held at Long Lake Elementary School Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Proceeds from the sale will go to the school's Parent Teacher Organization. There will be crafters, a bake sale and lunch will be available.

Local DAR offers two essay contests
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Job Winslow Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is offering two essay contests to students in public, private or parochial schools, or those who are home schooled.
The American History Essay contest is open to grades 5-8. The Christopher Columbus essay contest is open to grades 9-12. Winning essays at each level will be forwarded to compete at state, district and national levels. Awards are given locally to participants. The deadline is Dec. 1.

YMCA offers Pee Wee Sport program
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Grand Traverse Bay YMCA has established a new Pee Wee Sport program for children in preschool, ages 3-5, at the YMCA Child Care Center.
Classes meet twice a week for three weeks. The cost is $35 per class for the public and $15 for members.

Apple committee offers contest
DeWITT -- The Michigan Apple Committee is offering schools a chance at cash prizes in its School Sweepstakes, an initiative that benefits local schools and local farmers.
To participate, students in K-12 schools collect the Michigan Apple proofs of purchase from the apple bags. For each proof submitted according to the contest rules, the name of the school is entered in a random drawing. The more students collect, the greater the school's chance of winning.
Students may start collecting proofs now and save them through the spring. Entries must be postmarked by April 15. Sample proofs, entry form, rules and support materials are available at MichiganApples.com/schools&kids.
West performing 'Tale of Two Cities'
TRAVERSE CITY -- West Senior High continues its performances of "A Tale of Two Cities" Thursday through Saturday.

Kirtland offers $10 education classes
ROSCOMMON -- Area residents will have a chance to study or brush up on a variety of subjects this fall and winter, with Kirtland Community College again set to offer an assortment of community education classes, with some costing just $10.

STEP program helps homeless students
TRAVERSE CITY -- In 2008-09, Traverse City Area Public Schools' Students in Transition Empowerment Program identified more than 500 TCAPS students who qualified as "in residential transition" under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.
In the first six weeks of the current school year, STEP has served more than 200 eligible students throughout the district.
STEP is a free program offered by TCAPS that provides supportive education-related services to eligible students who have lost permanent housing due to foreclosure, eviction or for reasons related to economic hardship. The goal is to ensure school stability, remove barriers to full participation in education, and support academic achievement while children are in residential transition.

Festival of Trains poster contest set
TRAVERSE CITY -- Children may enter artwork for the 2009 Festival of Trains poster contest, sponsored by the Grand Traverse Heritage Center.
Two winning posters will be selected and will serve as the official posters of the 2009 Festival of Trains, displayed at businesses throughout the region.
Age categories are 5-7 and 8-12 years old, with one winner per category. Children may enter original artwork only. The deadline is 5 p.m. Nov. 23.
One entry per child may be mailed to the Grand Traverse Heritage Center, 322 Sixth St., Traverse City, MI 49684, or dropped off at that location. Each winner will receive a family pass to the Festival of Trains, a framed copy of their poster and recognition at the "Holiday at Heritage" event.

TRAVERSE CITY -- Delta Kappa Gamma, Traverse City Phi Chapter will host career coach Shannon LeJeune Nov. 17 at 5 p.m. at the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District.

EMS bands to hold benefit concert
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Traverse City East Middle School Jazz Band and students from the EMS Symphony Band will take the stage at the school's performance hall Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. to benefit the Father Fred Foundation.
Concert-goers are asked to bring personal care items (especially diapers in sizes 4-6) in lieu of an admission charge. The band will be delivering the items Nov. 24, two days before Thanksgiving.
