Northwood University in Midland has named two local recipients of $5,000 Free Enterprise Scholarships to freshmen entering this fall. Shane W. Hoffmann, son of Mark and Michelle Hoffmann of Traverse City, will graduate from Traverse City West Senior High School in the spring. Eric A Somsel will graduate from Brethren High School. He is the son of Mary Jane Somsel of Traverse City and Eric Somsel of Brethren.

The Early Childhood Investment Corporation (ECIC) today announced that Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau counties will join 31 other Michigan communities that are focusing on the needs of young children and their families through an $80,000 grant to support the development of a local Great Start Collaborative. Local leaders conduct in-depth community assessments and develop strategic plans for the development of a comprehensive system of early childhood services and supports for children from birth to age 5 and their families.
