Middle-schoolers become docents

ELK RAPIDS About 30 Cherryland Middle School eighth-graders studied all winter about life on the farm at the turn of the century.

The students will act as docents to fourth-graders who are studying Michigan history on Wednesday and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until noon at Samel's Family Heritage Society. The public is invited to attend.

NMC offers scholarship at BBQ

TRAVERSE CITY Northwestern Michigan College will host the 53rd annual barbecue from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

To celebrate serving the 500,000th guest, a drawing for a full tuition scholarship will be held. Anyone who buys a ticket is eligible to enter. The winner will be drawn from all entrants at 5 p.m. The tuition offer is good for 10 years and may be redeemed by anyone the winner chooses.

Barbecue tickets are $5 in advance and $6 at the gate. For details call 995-1020.

Play ball with the Beach Bums

TRAVERSE CITY Traverse City College Preparatory Academy will host the Traverse City Beach Bums as part of an open house on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.

There will be refreshments, games and activities, as well as a chance to talk to the school leader and staff and tour the facility, 1402 Carlisle Road, near Centre ICE. Guests can play ball with the Beach Bums and can bring an item to be autographed. Autograph sheets will also be provided.

Students entering grades 9-12 can apply to enroll for the 2008-09 school year. Space is limited and seats will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Remaining students will be placed on a waiting list.

TCAPS to hold community talk

TRAVERSE CITY Traverse City Area Public Schools' Superintendent Jim Feil will host a community coffee conversation May 20 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Tompkins/Boardman Administration Center Curriculum Room, 412 Webster St.

The discussion will be informal and provide community members an opportunity to offer ideas or ask questions regarding how TCAPS is working to prepare students for the future. RSVP at 933-1725 by May 13.

Westwoods hosts family fundraiser

TRAVERSE CITY Westwoods Elementary School will host a spaghetti dinner fundraiser and silent auction Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. to benefit the family of first-grade teacher Jennifer Johnson, whose husband, Tom, was injured in an explosion.

Dinner includes spaghetti, salad, breadsticks and homemade desserts. Take out will be available. Donations for the family are also accepted. Call Bonnie Shaw at 933-7970 for details.

Help kids GRASP skills over summer

TRAVERSE CITY Help K-8 students stay on top of language arts and/or math skills this summer with GRASP guided, at-home programs offered by Northwestern Michigan College.

Registration deadline is May 16 (registrations received after that date will be processed as supplies last).

After registering, parents attend an introductory session on June 4 or 5.

The cost is $65 for either reading or math, or $115 for both. Financial aid is available.

Community exhibition at Alba

ALBA Alba School will celebrate National Exhibition Month with its 6th annual Community Exhibition on Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m.

The school will be open to view exhibitions and presentations from students from preschool through 12th grade.

National Exhibition Month is a campaign sponsored by the Coalition of Essential Schools, a national nonprofit organization.

Alba will be participating with more than 100 schools across 25 states.

'Chance to Dance' at NMC on Fridays

TRAVERSE CITY A "Chance to Dance" is offered Fridays from 10 p.m. to midnight at Northwestern Michigan College.

Participants will practice learned steps and discover new ones every Friday, now through June 20 (except May 23), in the Physical Education building.

Admission is $5 at the door. No partner necessary. Wear slippery-soled shoes. For details, call 995-1700.

Local author to speak at meeting

TRAVERSE CITY Doug Stanton, a local author and co-founder of the Traverse City Film Festival, will speak at the May 21 meeting of the Leelanau County Chapter of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel (MARSP).

Stanton will speak on "The Founding and Future of the Traverse City Film Festival" at 11:55 a.m. at the Bluebird in Leland.

In addition, local chapter delegates to the MARSP area conference will summarize legislative and health issues at the meeting. Cost of lunch is $11. Call Emma Stayer at 271-3689 by May 19 for reservations.

Leelanau MARSP meets the third Wednesday of the month from May through Oct.

All Michigan retired school employees are welcome.

'College for Kids' offered at NMC

TRAVERSE CITY Northwestern Michigan College is launching its 31st season of "College for Kids," featuring 159 learning opportunities for ages 4-17. One-week courses are held each week of summer beginning June 16.

Limited financial aid is available.

Tractor Safety training at MSUE

SUTTONS BAY The Leelanau County Michigan State University Extension will hold a tractor safety program for teenagers ages 14-15 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 17-26 from 6 to 9 p.m.

The written and driving tests will be administered June 28 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants must attend all five sessions to become certified.

The cost is $60 per person; scholarships are available.
