Glenn Loomis celebrates 50 years

TRAVERSE CITY -- April marks Glenn Loomis Elementary School's 50th anniversary. To celebrate this special occasion, a variety of events will be held this week.

The Glenn Loomis Senior Graduating Class of 2008 will open a time capsule today at 3:45 p.m. A Celebration of Achievement and 50th Anniversary Celebration will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the gym. The assembly will highlight 50 years of achievement and will honor former staff. A 1950s Family Fun Sock Hop will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday in the gym and cafeteria. Students, families and community members can enjoy music and dancing, a dress-up contest and a 1950s-style dinner.

Middle school hosts orientation nights

TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse City West Middle School will hold a parent orientation meeting for parents of incoming sixth-graders Wednesday in Little Theatre at 7 p.m.

Parents of incoming seventh-graders will have orientation at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Parents will be provided an overview of curriculum. Students will have the opportunity in May to tour West Middle School facilities and meet counselors and staff and learn what to expect from their middle school experience

Arbor Day feted with students

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Friendly Garden Club of Traverse City will celebrate Arbor Day with second-graders from Eastern Elementary School Friday at 10 a.m. in East Bay Park.

Four Autumn Spire Red Maple trees donated by Donald Schmuckal to honor his children will be planted. John Frazier, city forester, will supervise the planting. The community is invited to attend.

Students present 'Business 101'

TRAVERSE CITY -- Students in Mrs. Zuiderveen's Grand Traverse Academy upper elementary class will play the role of teacher when they present "Business 101" to their parents Friday at 11 a.m.

Business 101 is the culmination of a student-run business called "School Tools." The group of fourth-,

fifth- and sixth-graders sold school supplies such as pencils, erasers and rulers to their classmates every Tuesday during lunch. In their business presentation, the marketing, accounting and sales teams will discuss what it takes to plan, start and run a successful business.

Every elementary classroom at GTA conducts a student-run business, with the objective of providing students with real-life learning experience. Proceeds go toward class field trips or other special events that take place throughout the year.

Downtown TC celebrates children

TRAVERSE CITY -- Downtown Traverse City joins with the Grand Traverse Association for the Education of Young Children for the 14th Annual Celebration for Young Children Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Little ones and their families are invited to enjoy entertainment, exhibits and hands-on activities at sites throughout downtown.

Agency plans awareness events

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Tri-County Coalition for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect is holding events in April to raise awareness of child abuse prevention efforts.

The Day of the Young Child will be held in downtown Traverse City April 26. Blue Sunday on April 27 involves area churches praying for children and families. Also April 27 will be a candlelight vigil on the courthouse lawn to commemorate victims of abuse. It will begin with a speaker at 6:30 p.m., followed by a circle time of sharing and light.

High school writers to be honored

BENZONIA -- The second annual Bruce Catton Historical Awards for outstanding high school essays will be presented at 4 p.m. April 27 at historic Mills Community House, once home of Bruce Catton.

Winning essays will be read by adult thespians and speakers; the writers will be introduced and receive certificates of achievement. The awards are made by the Mills Community House Association, working with the high school History and English teachers, and with essay judges from throughout the community.

Love and Logic workshop set

TRAVERSE CITY -- Speaker and author Bob Sornson, Ph.D., will present the principles of Love and Logic parenting April 28 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church, 222 Cass Street., Traverse City.

Based on the Love and Logic philosophy developed by Jim Fay and Foster W. Cline, M.D., this workshop offers stories, laughter and practical skills.

No registration required; free-will donation accepted. Free child care will be available.

Culinary, hospitality scholarship offered

GAYLORD -- The Gaylord/Otsego County Chamber of Commerce will offer a Culinary Arts Scholarship to an Otsego County resident pursuing a career in the hospitality field.

Applicants must also be enrolled in or accepted into a college/unveristy program. Applications and details are available by calling the Chamber office at (989) 732-6333 or stop by at 101 W. Main Street in downtown Gaylord. Applications must be received by 5 p.m. May 14.

Author Perry visits NMC

TRAVERSE CITY -- Michael Perry, author of "Truck: A Love Story" will appear at 7 p.m. on April 29 at the Hagerty Center on Northwestern Michigan College's Great Lakes campus.

Perry is also author of the bestselling memoir "Population 485: Meeting Your Neighbors One Siren at a Time," and the essay collection "Off Main Street."

The author's appearance will help gauge audience interest in more such visits and complement existing community programs, such as the TC Reads community reading project.

The event is free and open to the public.

MTA offers info for parents, students

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Manufacturing Technology Academy will hold Information Nights for current high school sophomores and selected juniors in the five-county area to learn about MTA.

Students and parents may attend a session April 29 or May 14, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at MTA, located in the M-TEC building at 2600 Aero Park Drive in Traverse City.

KidzArt donates classes at Goodwill

TRAVERSE CITY -- KidzArt is donating classes to the young residents of the Goodwill Inn for an hour each Wednesday.

"I see creating art as a great way to reduce stress and what could be more stressful than not having a regular residence?" said Sue Olson, Executive Director. Watch for some framed masterpieces created during class to be presented for silent auction at The Big Party, the major fundraiser for Goodwill Industries, on Oct. 4.

Junior high students to visit high school

TRAVERSE CITY -- Eighth and ninth grade students from Traverse City East Junior High School will have the opportunity to visit Central High School to tour the facilities, meet counselors and staff, and learn what to expect from their high school experience.

Eighth graders will travel to CHS April 29; and ninth grade students will tour the high school on May 1.

Also, information meetings will be held April 24 and May 8 for families of incoming ninth grade students at 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria.

'No Child Left Inside' starts now

LANSING -- A new statewide initiative is having a positive effect on getting kids outside. Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Gov. Jennifer Granholm have designated "No Child Left Inside Days" April 22-27.

Michigan State Parks has planned special environmental and conservation programs, making outdoor play a priority. Go to www.michigan.gov/dnr and click on Education and Outreach to learn more.

Student leaders offered opportunity

MANISTEE -- The Manistee Rotary Club and the Manistee Sunrise Rotary Club will be identifing six Manistee County high school seniors with leadership potential to attend the Michigan-Ontario Life Leadership Conference and receive $750 college scholarships.

The conference will be held June 18-21 at the Kettunen Center near Tustin. In addition to funding the $750 scholarships for the six outstanding students, the Rotary Clubs will also cover the $300 per-student cost of attending the Life Leadership Conference. Eligibility is based on citizenship and leadership potential, with some consideration of academic scholarship. Applications must be received by the Rotary Club no later than April 26.

Appications are available from guidance counselors at Bear Lake, Brethren, Manistee, Manistee Catholic Central and Onekama high schools, as well as CASMAN Academy, and Manistee Rotary Youth Committee Chairpersons David Yarnell and Mitch Deisch.
