Treece qualifies for Junior Worlds

Ex-Glen Lake star 4th in Nationals

FROM STAFF REPORTS

SAN DIEGO -- Marissa Treece is headed to the world stage.

Treece, the Notre Dame freshman and former Glen Lake all-stater, finished fourth in Saturday's USA Track & Field Junior Cross Country Championships in San Diego's Mission Bay Park.

Treece's finish earned her one of six spots on the American team that will compete in the World Championships beginning March 30 in Scotland.

Treece, 18, said she was sitting sixth in the 6-kilometer race before kicking past two runners in the final 600 meters. She completed the course in 21:33, one second ahead of Duke's Emily Schwitzer and two seconds in front of Lauren Saylor of Clovis, Calif.

The top three finishers were 16-year-old Jordan Hasay of the San Luis (Calif.) Distance Club (20:32), Stanford University's Alex Gits (20:45) and 17-year-old Emily Reese of Dunwoody, Ga. (21:26).

"I went out with the front group, and I was right up there until about 4,000 meters," Treece said. "I fell back into the next group, and over the last 600 meters I gave it everything I had."

Treece said she is fully recovered from the mononucleosis that slowed her during the fall season.
